Thomas,
I agree! The birds leave my garden alone, while bambi and friends have made me fence it if I want to see any produce. I also have three fruit trees which live only by the grace of fence. I planted about 25 each of pecan and walnut trees and perhaps 10% survived the deer. Before our old dog died, he at least kept them out of the yard. This summer, within 48 hours of old Scottie's peaceful demise, the deer had chewed several hostas to the ground. It amuses me when folks ask about what to plant as food plots for our furry friends. Put out a garden! Maybe they'll leave you a tomato or two if you let them have all the beans, greens and everything else.
The son-in-law was out walking his 35 acres yesterday looking for turkey. He didn't see gobblers, but he said he could have filled as many deer tags as he could possibly want in the first half hour. Deer we got.
You know, I think the birds have already left. My little part of heaven must have just been serving as a staging area for their trip.
