I should have known better but I was trying to save time...

Time for my 100 hour service on my trusty little 790. It doesn't really call for it, but I thought I'd treat it to an oil and filter change. The dealer I purchased the tractor from is about 45 minutes away (large ag dealer) but there is a JD lawn dealer right near work. I've never cared for this dealer much but it is close.

So yesterday I met MossRoad for lunch which was a lot of fun. We live and work in the same town but just haven't been able to get together until now. I'll vouch for him, he's an alright guy! Anyway, I head over to the the Deere dealer after that for the oil and filter. Shame on me for not consulting my manuals and parts book ahead of time but with the rental house full of boxes all those little tasks take on a whole new degree of difficulty. Besides, the dealer should know, right?

So I'm watching the guy flip through the parts book and I see that the filter number for the 790 is hand written in blue ink. He goes to the shelf and pulls the part then asks if I want the 30 weight oil. Again, I hadn't checked so I agreed that would work.

I was a bit suspicious so I checked the filter on the tractor last night. Sure enough, a different number. I dug up my manuals this morning and they agreed with what is currently on the tractor, not what the guy sold me. On top of that, the "preferred" oil is 15W40, with 30W being an alternate that in fact isn't the best match for my expected temperature range.

So now I'll be making another trip to the close dealer and likely a trip to my original dealer. Not a huge deal but it does cost me my time.

I guess I'm pretty much just whining, but the bottom line for me is if you find a dealer you trust, stick with him /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Well Rob, i hate to tell you this, but it's hand written in the filter book at the dealership I work at too ! Deere changed the part number from the origonal M801209 to a #M806419
the filter isn't the same outer size, but retains the same filtering ability. They had a problem with this filter contacting
the engine covers on so of the new models and made this change to cure it. I do agree with you on the 15-40, that's all we use in the diesels we service.
