About 8 weeks ago I was contacted by a guy that said he cleaned up foreclosed properties. He said he had a farm that had 20 round wheels of hay, some odd cubic feet of square bails and a big lot of horse feed. He said if I was interested I could have it and in return there was 50 pt 2 x 8s that I could have. He made it very clear to not make a move until the brokers in California gave the word.
Well last weekend he started calling with his azz on fire to get it moved. I asked then what to do if some nosy neighbor or the law showed up. He said " I am in complete control of this property and you will not have any trouble." Oh I forgot I found out during the wait time this guy is a local politician.
So yesterday morning me and my helper load the tractor and take off on the 45 min drive. We get there and she examines the hay and proclaims it fit for her horses. So we start loading. It's stored between a corn crib ( horse feed) and the building that had the sq bales in it that were now gone. The whole thing had one big roof over it ,with the bales stacked 4 wide and 3 high. So now I can get up in the crib where I can see how deep the stack is. Man there's at least 48 bales in here. So I text my contact and told him. I strapped the 16 bales down and never did hear from him. We get back unload and head back. I set out to do this in about 4 hrs but now I'm figuring 12 or 14 hrs.
So we stop for lunch and head back to get another load. Crest the hill to the barn and Jizam there sets the deputies and an old guy with a red truck. So we get out and I walk up and say to the old man " boy this must be serious with the law here. He says your stealing my hay. My stomach sinks thinking about jail or worse yet having to go bring the 16 bales back. So I start explaining what I was doing and who gave me permission. I call my contact and no answer. So I go back and ask the old man what the hays worth. He's says $20 a bale. I'm like hale yeah. So about that time my contact calls. I explain what's going on. The old man had been storing hay here for 20 years and had made a deal with the real estate agent to keep the hay here til the property was sold. Apparently the agent never told California what was going on and nobody ever told my contact what was happening. So then more people got in involved and started calling. At One time during this the deputy had her cell my cell and the old mans cell in her hands talking.
So while all this is going on I pull the old timer aside say look we have both been screwed by white collar stupidity. I will give you the $320 for the hay and help you load the rest and get it out of here. Because by this time it was looking doubtful whether this guy had claim of the hay. So finally some woman calls the deputy and says do not pass money. They will go to agent on Mon. and the bank and tell them what is going on. I said what do you want to do with the rest of the hay. She said I don't care and hung up. So I told the deputy she was safe to leave us and we could handle it from here. I said yep the old timer has COPD and I'm down in the back so I think we are good. Soon as she leaves we start loading the hay and haul it to the old timers second cousins house down the road and off load it behind the barn. 2 trips he's got all but 16 bales of his hay back. I go back and load my tractor and haul azz back to Chesterfield. I left the old timer all my info and a couple of references with the promise if the bank screws us I will be back with his $320.
Now on the way back my contact calls again. He apologizes for an embarrassing situation. Promises me that the guy will get paid for hay and I would be compensated for my time. He then asked if he could take us out to dinner and talk about a future in working with him on some more cleanup jobs. I'm like yeah let's see how this one turns out.
So has anybody else had anything like this happen. I feel lucky that I walked in to this and didn't wind up in jail with my equipment impounded. Right now I think worst thing that can happen is I'm out 20 gals of diesel and a days time. Plus pay the guy for the hay. But I do think I got a new friend in Nottaway county.
