Ok...it's time to put the kids garden in this year. Last year they promised to water it in the summer but of course it almost never got watered. This year I'm putting in a water line with some sprinklers. It's only 20' x 80' but it's about 400' from the nearest water source. I can drain the line for the winter so I'm not too worried about freezing. I'm planning to use my subsoiler to dig a trench about 12" deep and set some PVC. Is there a better way to do it? Also, I need to go under my road (2 lane ashphalt). Is there a better way then cutting the ashphalt and pulling the subsoiler through it and repairing the ashphalt?

I don't know how much money you want to spend but the only other way to go under a road is underground boring. I don't know how expensive it would be to run under a road but I did have one run about 450 feet for me under black top and he charged me $4,000.00 and it was tricky, not a straight shot. But it would not hurt just to call them and give you a quote over the phone as I am sure there could be some expensive set up charges even for just a 20 ft shot.

I considered boring but I definitely don't want to spend that kind of money. Has anyone tried using one a water jet nozzle on the end of a piece of PVC to go through 20' of clay?

I think you are going the right way. I'd sure try that PVC and water jet before digging up my road or calling in somebody. You do realize you are gonna have a muddy mess while doing it, don't you? Also, I'd dig down on each side of the drive so I could get a straight shot to the other side.

Take some pictures so we can cheer you on.:)

One thing you might want to try when JETTING in the line under the road is to use 2 lines
one smaller pressure line for water IN that slides through a larger line, the debris & water flows OUT the larger line. it is only way I would want to try & go through/under my road... lots of water under the road sounds bad to me.

this would mean digging a working trench on one side and a hole in the other side to come out... make the IN side have a deeper hole right where you will go through to collect water & mud. then make the deeper spot run sideways so you can pump out the water & mud.

once both lines are fully through/under the road remove the inside pressure feed line & replace with a new one that will carry the water to the garden. I would use the black poly lines designed for well water & irrigation as they are one solid hunk & are more freeze resistant than pvc.

Well, trying to go under the road with a water jet didn't go anywhere. The clay and rock that I was trying to go through didn't budge. I ended up using a subsoiler to rip out a small trench in the ashphalt and slightly below for the pipe. I have 280' of pipe in now and another 280' to go. Those veggies better be worth it, lol.

Well, I'm sorry you had to rip up your road, but glad you "got 'er done." I thought in the beginning that you could have trouble with rocks, but since you didn't mention anything but clay, I thought you might make your waterjet work.

...lookin' forward to some garden pics.

I didn't even get to the rocks! The clay is so dense that it took me 15 minutes to get 2 inches into the clay.
