The best sunlight I have for growing tomatoes is alongside a small pier. Two years ago I had a wonderful crop there, but the soil or bacterial problems took its toll the second year. This year I am trying container maters, and packing in all I can on the little pier.

Here are the beginnings of my 'Mater Maze....and I even have some "maise" growing in one of the boxes.

The container tomatoes are in some new top soil from my hunting land/old farm, and are looking great. These are Beef Steak and Better Boy.

Here a shot that shows the test box. Better Boy and Celebrity tomatoes died in this box last year. This year I am trying Neptune, Florida 7514 and also have some corn. Check out the hydrangheas too. I LOVE springtime.

Well done. You are most definitely going to have a good supply of tomatoes. My Family loves the Beef Steak variety. Although you have probably already thought of this, I wish to include this question in my post. Have you considered the potential damage from adverse weather conditions, such as wind and water levels -waves- resulting because of the close proximity to the Lake? Even though the plant containers allow for a somewhat easy transfer to a higher and more protective location, once those plants are mature and full of tomatoes, the task may become troublesome. Perhaps, a hand truck will aid in providing a better means of transport, if the need arises? Once again, I wish to reiterate - Well done.

This is my first year for Beef Steak. I have heard good things about them, and folks on a tomato growing forum rave about them. So, I am giving them try. I think the soil effects the taste of tomatoes more than the variety.

I will not have problems with waves or flooding, the water will never get that high. It is good to have irrigation water right out of the lake. Wind is another matter. The open area across the lake to the northwest and west definitely give some trouble. I have the hoops tied in good with wire, so that does help. Recently, we had some tough winds that pounded the tomato leaves against the wire. Some damage but theyh have recovered well.

Beefsteaks are excellent!!
What I love about them is that they are mostly meat, not all watery and seeds when you slice them.
Check out a cross section of them online (google), you will see what I mean.
