I was buying road diesel for convienance most of the time. It was clear with maybe just a touch of yellowish color. The off road diesel was pink/red the couple times I bought it. I just bought some ULSD for the first time and this stuff poured green. Not quite as green as full strength antifreeze, but really close in color. It must have been diesel since the tractor burned it OK.

Did JD have anything to do with the color selection??

The question was a joke. All you Kubuta guys can calm down. No color war wanted.

You don't think they call it "Green Diesel Technology" for nothing do you. :)

In all seriousnes I have not seen any of the new ULSD colored green. I would think that it has something to do with the additive package that the distributor is adding to the fuel. The new ULSD is getting different additive packages by the distributor to make up for other's that have been removed. Might just be that the ones your supplier is using are green.

My last 2 containers were ULSD from Exxon. I was surprised that it is STILL green (light green, like the old stuff). I expected it to be clear, like light lubricating (5 to 10 weight) oil that we got off our Hydrofinishing unit in the refinery. I suspect that they're coloring it. I'd sooner they leave it clear.

Just remember, the visual color of diesel fuel has nothing to do with its quality

Well, somewhat. Maybe not color but opticity. If it's cloudy looking it may be contaminated with water. I have also seen very contaminated diesel fuel a few times that was orange. It actually looked like, hmm, well, remember Tang the orane drink. It looked like Tang. Didn't taste like Tang but it sure looked like it.

The diesel in the tank of my car stored for 4 1/2 years was a light brown color. No problem running it except that the car developed a constant speed ping for the 2nd time in its life. Put some Chevron Red Line in the tank. That fixed it up.

ULSD diesel SHOULD be completely clear. The next 2 distillates heavier are 5 grade (some of which goes into diesel) and 10 grade oil. At Exxon anyway, these were completely clear coming off our final processing unit. The main processing that produced the clear color was Hydrofining. This is done to all ULSD diesel now to get the sulfur down.

Manufacturers undoubtedly are adding colorizers that make it look more like the old stuff. Bought some Citgo diesel near New Orleans several years ago. It was clear at that time. I'd prefer that they all left the color out.

The ULSD we've been getting from Chevron and BP has been generally clear to light-blue, however brown, green, blue, yellow, or any shades inbetween etc. don't mean anything regarding the distillate quality, ie specific gravity, cetane index, alkane-aromatic ratio, lubricity, additives, etc.
