Our farm near Muscle Shoals, Alabama...FINALLY!!!
Tractor
RK37SC & John Deere 2030
Have had Blue and Red. Still got a Green. Now I've gone over to the Orange side of the Force. I really needed a very sure-footed, very maneuverable riding mower for use on my very hilly and steep yard. Had tried a commercial Grasshopper - about ended up in the pond, and it won't do anything other than mow. Tried my LS R4020 - too big and it tore up the yard. Tried push mowing with a self propelled - dang near killed myself with cardiac arrest. Tried a JD X540 and thought the differential lock and ag-type tires on the back would do the trick, but nope. Saw a used Kubota BX-something at the local JD dealer and really liked it, but it was priced way too high. But, I was impressed by the solid feel of it and minimal use of cheap plastic and how sure-footed it felt on very uneven terrain. Did a little research and decided I needed something with around 23hp, thereabouts, so started looking all over for a used BX2230.

Found one at Selby Implement in Quincy, IL, where the folks that lease part of my wife's family farm ground do business. The folks at Selby were great to do business with and I'm very happy with the deal I got. It's a 2005 BX2230 with 1575 hours, and it has the 60" MMM. Not a leak anywhere. The front end is in excellent condition, it had just had all fluids and filters replaced, new battery and new blades. Only known problem is with the turn signals and flasher, but I can troubleshoot it and fix it myself.

Here it is just arriving at it's new home on the 15th, just as it's starting to get its "receiving inspection" by the Inspection Team. Note the 100 yard long gravel driveway going up the hill in the background. One of the BX2230's regular job will be driveway maintenance.

The BX2230 getting it's "walk around" inspection. A few minutes later, after being unloaded off the trailer, it was properly "marked" as family property by Griff and Cowboy, the two male German Shepherds.

That afternoon, I mowed the yard with it the first time and I was absolutely amazed how well it worked out. I was able to mow more of the pond dam that ever before and was able to mow much of the east side of our pond, which I always previously had to (very laboriously) do with a weed eater. I used the differential lock 5 or 6 times and had to use 4WD two or three times, but it was very surefooted and didn't tear up the yard. I felt more safe and secure than on any mower I'd ever previously used. I was very surprised by how much power the little BX2230 had - it never felt like it was lacking. Also, I was very impressed by the quality, solid feel of the whole tractor and the convenience of the controls. I've definitely come over to the Orange side.

A few days later, I found a used JD grader blade that fits it and worked perfectly smoothing and filling in washed out ruts in the driveway.

Nice tractor. I loved the dogs especially the black GSD. We have a male that looks just like it. I think the black GSD's are much prettier than the tan ones. We have been looking for someone with a female to breed ours with.

Congratulations, my wife loves "her" BX2200 and 2660 (took position upon retirement). We have mowed some extremely steep stuff with them and done a lot of dirt work. I recently added wheel spacers from Bro-Tek for added stability when using the FEL on hills, but these things are really stable as is.

Gary: The Black & Tan GSD is Cowboy. He's our senior citizen - he's around 15 years old. We adopted him a couple of years ago from the local humane shelter. He was in really bad shape; cancerous tumor on his leg, infested with fleas so badly that he'd lost most of his hair, full of worms, gum disease, horribly infected ears - but we nursed him back to good health. When his elderly original owner had to go into a nursing home, his dumbazz son just dumped the poor dog on the street rather than dealing with his health issues. He somehow survived for about a year as a stray before the local animal control officer found him and picked him up. He was so sweet that the folks at the humane shelter didn't have the heart to put him down, in spite of his age and health problems. He still had his original collar and nametag on, so the animal control officer was able to find out his history. The wife and I decided that we would attempt to make his remaining time here as happy and comfortable for him as possible and he surprised us all and has thrived. He's a complete joy and absolutely the most loyal dog we've ever shared our home with - he follows me literally every step I make. He's the sweetest and friendliest old fella to everybody and everything he meets, as long as they don't do something overtly aggressive and stupid, but there's no doubt that he'd give his last breath to protect us and our family. Another thing that has really surprised us is that he and Griff, our other male GSD, have gotten along perfectly. Neither one has so much as curled a lip at the other. They'll eat or drink out of the same bowl, step over each other, share a seat in the truck, etc., and are complete friends.

Back to the BX2230: I know that I want to get a small bush hog and a tiller for it, and wife wants a small cart to pull behind it. A FEL would be nice, but don't know if I can afford that anytime soon.

I love the dog story....good for you.

The more I work in law enforcement the less faith I have in people and the more I have in animals.

Dogs are some of the best people I know, but that is really an insult to them.

As to the little tractor....you will be amazed at what the little guy can do.

Congrats on the tractor. The BX's do work great for mowing on hills. The blade you found is a nice fit for the tractor, it just needs a little orange paint now;) Instead of getting a cart to pull behind the BX get a set of pallet forks. You can build a box to haul all kinds of stuff around plus move pallets. The pallet forks would also work on your other tractors.

Enjoy the BX, I love my little BX1500, I haven't found myself needing more power with the 48" MMM and 42" trash mower on the back. I'd be lying though if I said I wouldn't like something newer with more power, just because :D
