Have had Blue and Red. Still got a Green. Now I've gone over to the Orange side of the Force. I really needed a very sure-footed, very maneuverable riding mower for use on my very hilly and steep yard. Had tried a commercial Grasshopper - about ended up in the pond, and it won't do anything other than mow. Tried my LS R4020 - too big and it tore up the yard. Tried push mowing with a self propelled - dang near killed myself with cardiac arrest. Tried a JD X540 and thought the differential lock and ag-type tires on the back would do the trick, but nope. Saw a used Kubota BX-something at the local JD dealer and really liked it, but it was priced way too high. But, I was impressed by the solid feel of it and minimal use of cheap plastic and how sure-footed it felt on very uneven terrain. Did a little research and decided I needed something with around 23hp, thereabouts, so started looking all over for a used BX2230.
Found one at Selby Implement in Quincy, IL, where the folks that lease part of my wife's family farm ground do business. The folks at Selby were great to do business with and I'm very happy with the deal I got. It's a 2005 BX2230 with 1575 hours, and it has the 60" MMM. Not a leak anywhere. The front end is in excellent condition, it had just had all fluids and filters replaced, new battery and new blades. Only known problem is with the turn signals and flasher, but I can troubleshoot it and fix it myself.
Here it is just arriving at it's new home on the 15th, just as it's starting to get its "receiving inspection" by the Inspection Team. Note the 100 yard long gravel driveway going up the hill in the background. One of the BX2230's regular job will be driveway maintenance.
The BX2230 getting it's "walk around" inspection. A few minutes later, after being unloaded off the trailer, it was properly "marked" as family property by Griff and Cowboy, the two male German Shepherds.
That afternoon, I mowed the yard with it the first time and I was absolutely amazed how well it worked out. I was able to mow more of the pond dam that ever before and was able to mow much of the east side of our pond, which I always previously had to (very laboriously) do with a weed eater. I used the differential lock 5 or 6 times and had to use 4WD two or three times, but it was very surefooted and didn't tear up the yard. I felt more safe and secure than on any mower I'd ever previously used. I was very surprised by how much power the little BX2230 had - it never felt like it was lacking. Also, I was very impressed by the quality, solid feel of the whole tractor and the convenience of the controls. I've definitely come over to the Orange side.
A few days later, I found a used JD grader blade that fits it and worked perfectly smoothing and filling in washed out ruts in the driveway.
