I just replaced the computer that I mainly used to access the net. It had dual Pentium II 333 Mhz cpu's on a Tyan motherboard, 512 meg of ram, and two scsi hard drives. When I built it, it was state of the art. It was replaced with an AMD FX 60 powered machine with 4 gig of ram. The old machine had an 8gig and a 1 gig drive. The new one has a 150 gig raptor and a 320 gig WD SE16 drive. The original 1 gig Seagate drive cost me $500. The new 320 gig WD cost me $74. Computer life is even more accelerated than dog years. On the other hand, our tractors will probably be going long after we are gone.
I'm using Kubuntu OS with Firefox browser. I am enormously impressed with them.
One thing that I have noticed since TBN switched to new software is that when I log in, every new topic sends me to the last post on the topic. It used to send me to the last post that i read. Mostly I don't bother logging on any more.

Ronl, directing you to first or last post can be changed in user cp and you will be fine, That PC sounds like a hot-rod now. I think my monitor is going out slowly, the edges are sharp and the center is fuzzy

Maybe it is just the fact that I am using Firefox on Linux, but I am having a hard time finding ways to change settings.

Ron, my first hard drive was a 5 MEG external Radio Shack re-conditioned hard drive that cost me $300 and lasted just over a year running on a TRS80, Model IV.:p

I once had an external cell phone antennae with the magnet base. It sat near my moniter and eventually caused distortion like you describe. There is a tool on the computer that will fix that if that's your problem. Do a search for degauss on your computer and run it.

Bird, my first hard disc was a Seagate ST212, 10 Mb external drive that I was thrilled to get for less than $1000. I paid $995.

I think it was a month before I every copied a file to that drive. I thought I'd never fill it up. Those were the PCDOS days, then "Wild Bill" Gates came out with Windows...Aargh!

Yep, Jim, did you have a daisy wheel printer to go with that hard drive? I thought I had just about the ultimate rig back then.;)

I feel dumber than a stump, I don't know a gig from a wiget. I bought this computer at Wall-Mart for 398.00 on the day after Thanksgiving sale. It let;s me get on this board and a few others, and I can answer my e-mail if it isn't some kind of attachment, and Google has helped me find more info than I can ever use. I can talk to ya'll across the country and it doesn't cost me a penny where-as if I called each of you on the phone it would take me a week and cost more than I make. High Tech, I ain't, but you would be suprised at the stuff I can fix , if I can see what's broken. Later, Nat

My oldest brother had a 10 meg winchester drive for his business computer. It was a separate drive that was as big as a small appliance. I still have it stored in my basement. He printed mailing labels with a daisy wheel printer.
My first computer was a 286 with a massive 1 meg of memory and a 20 meg internal hard drive.
If our tractors ( notice the tractor tie in ) progressed at the same rate we would have started out twenty years ago with 20 horsepower Kubota and would now have a 600 horsepower tracked Agco. And a yard full of obsolete tractors that would not work with new attachments.
