Mrs. Parallel and I have been on a roller coaster going through the trails and tribulations of renovating the new house that we bought a few months ago and selling the old house. We closed on the sale of the old house on the last day of summer (September 21st) so at least that nightmare has come to an end. We got asking price for the old house, but in order to facilitate the USDA Rural Development financing; we agreed to put a new roof on it prior to the sale.

The little house has been a blessing to us, but I am soooooooo glad to see it go. It was simply a pain in the behind to have two houses, particularly while doing work on both of them at the same time. It didn稚 seem to matter which house I happened to be working on, whenever I needed a tool it was certain that the tool that I needed would be at the other house. It is also a relief that we only have a mortgage on one house. Even though the balance was pretty low on the old mortgage, it was still a potential problem if money became tight. We like to be able to make ALL bills on only one income. That way, a layoff (or in my case a down turn in business) won稚 necessarily be a catastrophe.

As for the renovations/move into the new house it seems that Murphy has set up his 斗aw firm here. Nothing has gone easy and most things have fought us every step of the way. We are living in an unfinished house at the moment. The tile that is supposed to look like cherry wood planks is installed (though not to my satisfaction) but the grout is not right and is therefore not sealed yet and due to delays in the completion of the floor, the baseboards and casing have not been installed yet. There are still several rooms that need to be painted or at least have one more coat applied. All of the rooms need the casing and trim work painted (and in some cases installed). The floors in the laundry room, guest bath and the master closet still need to be tiled. The Master bath is going to be completely renovated and a nearly 50 square foot double shower added, so that is still original and is the only working bathroom at the moment. Even so, it is starting to come together. The kitchen only needs the trim work painted and installed and it will be complete. All of the new appliances have been installed and are up and running and the washer and dryer have been installed in the laundry room even without the tile on the floor so we have clean laundry. I figure by Thanksgiving we should be all moved in well maybe Christmas.

Congratulations on selling the old place! It's always scary having two houses, especially in this economy. Sounds like you're making good progress on the new place. I know it doesn't seem like it some days, but you're getting there, and it will be done some day.

We're on 'hold' with our new house. We bought land in SC a couple years ago, and we're itching to get started on building. The reality is that we need to sell our current house before we can even get started- that's where the patience comes in. I'm too chicken to hold two mortgages. The equity on our current house is all we will have to build the new one. We're too old to have a mortgage on the next house- we want to own it out-right. We might get on the market this spring- I'm hoping someone out there will buy our house!

We were in the same boat when we built our country house. We were supposed to move into the new house before Thanksgiving. Then Christmas.....

We finally moved the after New Years!

I had saved up vacation so I had three weeks off. During the three weeks off from work I had three days off from work. :D Xmas, New Years(I had the flu), and the day before I went back to work.

We then had to finish moving out of the old house and get it fixed up to sell. CONSTANT WORK for four months.

Eventually we closed which was a huge relief just to get it done. Then there were all of the chores at the new house. :D

There is always something! :D

Later,
Dan

You are doing fine. Take a deep breath and forget about it for a while. You have your essentials. Nobody ever laid on their death bed and said 'I should have gotten that baseboard on sooner'. I am addicted to death bed jokes :D

It sure is a lot of work selling a house. No doubt about that.

Dave.
