There are two current threads offering comparisons across states: one on taxes and the other on fiscal health.

Related to this I understand that a cost of living adjusted poverty level has recently been created. It recognizes that living on $30k per year in San Francisco or New York is different than South Dakota or Alabama. Previously the number of people under the Poverty Level was based on one number for the entire country. The most striking change was Texas and California that previously had about the same percentage in poverty. After adjustment California is about 60% higher.
