Re: The words to \"Taps\" / offshoot

Hey WVBill,

Don't you want the money to go for Willy's/Hilly's new office space? (Uh-oh!,... heading "off-topic" again.)

There is SO MUCH that seems "just-not-right!" these days, that it's a struggle not to give -in completely to cynicism. /w3tcompact/icons/mad.gif

The great progress that this country has made in so many ways, is offset by the areas in which we've "slid-backwards", so that I'm afraid to really know the "bottom-line". But I know I don't have a good "gut" feeling about it.

TBN..., a little "bright-spot" of sanity! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: The words to \"Taps\"

Sometimes soldiers come home to ticker tape parades and cheering crowds. Other times, if they are among the lucky, they simply get to come home. I consider myself lucky.....I got to come home. It's sad that we have lost some of the honor that made military service a proud endeavour. Whether taps is played when I'm gone, or a flag draped on my remains, no one can take away my personal honor for having proudly served my country. It's just too bad that society is letting so many of the honorable traditions surrounding military service slip away. Honoring those who gave of themselves for their country should never be comprimised because of status or rank. Sad to think that's where we're headed. What will our young people really know of honor, commitment, and sacrifice? Very little I fear.

For what it's worth, let me take this opportunity to say, "thank you".

Bob, no offense, but I sure hope you are wrong. I'd like to beleave there are at least some young people for whom words like Freedom, and Liberty, are not just tired cliches. Otherwise what hope do we have?

Re: The words to \"Taps\"

I hope I'm wrong, too. Maybe I just don't "get it". So much of the focus in our society today is on "me". There just seems to be an attitude among our young folks of not wanting to get involved.....let somebody else do it. I can't say that I'm pessimistic, just not real optimistic.

My hope is that if the time ever comes for us to have to stand tall again as a country, we're able to. Actually, as baby boomers, we're probably no different than any other generation that gave up something in the name of freedom.....not as confident in the next generation being able to follow. I hope we're all surprised.

Re: The words to \"Taps\"

Thanks, Harv. Your "thank-you" belongs to all of the folks who have military service on their resumes.

Re: The words to \"Taps\"

I have no military experieince but have attended enough police line of duty funerals to not be able to listen to taps without tearing up. While not old enough for vietnam it still sickens me with the way the returning veterans were treated by so called "educated" college students protesting the war. The ignorance of someone blaming the soldier instead of the politicians who sent them still amazes me. I hope our new president does something to bolster the underpaid military and instill some national appreciation for those who still serve in the military. It's to often we forget we enjoy our lifestyles BECAUSE of the existence of the military. To ALL those who served in the past and still do - I also thank you.

Re: The words to \"Taps\"

I understand how you feel. But remember back when, the TV news ran stories on anti war protestors, Woodstock, Canabis smoking, and so on. Alot of older Americans thought the same about our generation.
Heck, At 19 I myself had no interest in being in the military. But, when Richard Nixon sent me a letter saying "greetings" I went because I felt that it was the right thing to do. I sure wasn't alone. Many others did the same thing.
So don't give up on these young folks just yet. Really we will never know until the chips are down.

Re: The words to \"Taps\"

I got one of those "greetings" letters that talked about my friends and neighbors, too. Darn near moved to Canada the next day. But didn't. Conscience, or duty, or something made me stay and learn to enjoy life hanging out the door of a helicopter flying around the jungle. I hope our young folks have whatever it takes to do the right thing if the time ever comes. You're probably right about older folks at that time..................OH MY GOD, we're starting to sound a lot like our parents.
