Looks like that didn't take too long, the first winch cable bit the dust today in the 16" of snow or so I was plowing. Got the to the end of my run and went to pick up the plow a bit and heard a pop....that was the end of my cable.:( No biggie I figured I'd just go grab a strap from the Wally world, a boat strap should work better anyway....wouldn't have been a problem had the Wally World not closed due to the storm. I guess my boat will lose it's winch strap early tomorrow morning so I can finish plowing, suppose that means I won't be able to go out fishing tomorrow now.

I hope the strap holds up better than the cable did. :D

What about those short pieces of amsteel winch rope (I saw on amaz...) that are specifically for snow plow use? They claim they handle the tight angles better than the steel cables.

I'm not sure, I've never seen them. Off to Amazon to check em' out, thanks.

Well, I would rather replace a cable than a winch. I'm sure you've seen my saga posted here with my 2 superwinches. Hope your up and plowing soon!

I'd look into a lift actuator. Most people I know end up having winch/cable problems from the repeditive use of lifting and lowering the plow. Winches work for that, but that's really not what they were designed for. Just my .02

Winch works like a charm, the cable just wasn't made to flex that far so often.

I found the Amsteel Plow cables, they look interesting but I see they sell one version without a chafe guard for a little over $20 and another with one for over $50....I'm thinking bang for my buck is going to the boat winch cable, it's stronger, cheaper, longer and will lay nicely on the spool.

I might in the future, my issue is speed. The winch is really fast, I don't really want to go to a lift actuator that is way slower. I might have to do it if this Warn can't hold up but I think it will last a long time even using it to lift/lower the plow so often.

All you need is 10' of cable for the plow. Cut what you have of the broken cable into 10' lengths and enjoy! Save the new cable for the summer.

The steel aircraft cable that came with my Warn winch chewed itself to pieces in one year. I replaced it with an Amsteel Blue winch rope and it has lasted 4 years with no noticeable sign of wear. The Amsteel Blue winds and free spools a lot better than steel aircraft cable. It doesn't bind up. I'll never go steel cable again.

The amsteel is the way to go. I use them on everything and they are tough as nails. I tried the boat strap and it broke in less then a year. I gave up on the ATV plow altogether 2 years ago for the kubota. Steel cable is a thing of the past

The Amsteel Blue synthetic rope is only a few dollars more than steel aircraft cable of comparable size. I would estimate the life of synthetic rope over steel cable at least ten times. Its stronger than steel of equal diameter and has less stretch than steel. And its just so much easier to use a winch with synthetic rope than steel cable.
