That is used to start in cold weather. YOu turn the key to the left and hold it for 10 seconds then start the tractor. If you have it (there will be a little plastic bottle that holds about 2 ozs on the top of the front of the motor behind the fan. It will connect to the intake with a rubber hose and also there will be a thing that screws into the intake with a wire running to it that will feed power to it. That thing will heat up when you turn the key and then allow some fuel (which is what goes in the bottle) to run in and ignite, warming the air up to aid in starting a cold motor. You really should not need it untill outside air is in the 30's or below.

You can tell I am a city boy trying to learn.

Is the fuel being talked about in the post above, diesel or some kind of starter fluid?

It holds diesel.

It's just diesel fuel. If you have a flip-cap bottle under the hood, you need to add a few ounces of diesel to the bottle. The newer version is a closed bottle that is plumbed into the fuel return lines coming off of the injectors. No need to add anything to that style bottle. (You really can't anyway because there is no cap.) Also, I've discovered this winter that my thermostart plug needs to be replaced. They go bad periodically, so if you don't see any improvement in cold weather starting when using the thermostart, the plug is probably no good.

A City slicker Huh  This should explain it better. There Should be An Ignighter with A hose from a cup with diesel fuel in it. When you give the Igniter Power. The Heating element heats up a check ball and lets in fuel and it gets ignited causing hot air to mix with the fuel in the tractors Cylinders when you go to start it causing it to start like a warm day.
Mine didn't have the fuel bowl but The Igniter was there. I put power to it and the Coil heated up but wouldn't burn. Thats why I came up with this to see what was going on. Ended up the check ball wasn't opening enough which just a liittle squeeze stokes it up.;)

Has anyone pulled and cleaned the T-start ignitor and found improvement? I seem to have to hold mine in "TS" for up to twenty seconds to get a quick start and it usually takes 2 or 3 tries before it fires.

I have had mine out it didn't need cleaned so cant answer that question but I have watched it while I turned the key and @ 10 seconds it is just starting a fire so 20 seconds is what I would call a normal cycle and its the time I use sometimes a little more.

You should be able to feel the intake around the TS and feel heat at 20 seconds too, re-heating it a couple times may be what you have to do its a trial and error thing you have to find the sweet spot your engine likes.

I have put my trans in neutral for less drag on real cold days and pulled the compression release and got the engine spinning over good to get mine started before also fwtw.

Every time you turn the key it is powering the TS anyway if not enough to light it its still involved in the starting circuit.

Just checking the weather it's going down to 25 Tonight so I was able to go out and use the TS. It's still in the Upper 30's When I went to crank it up. It was evident it looked pretty good. Sorry about the pics. darn camera Ph. You can see the Red Ign. and the after math in about 10 sec. Just bumped the starter and it fired rght up
