I've tried searching but can't seem to pull up any threads on the thermostart system. They have to be out there, but I just can't find them. Anyways, it's starting to get cold out and I would like to take a moment now to verify my thermostart system is actually working. How does the system actually work and what should I check to make sure it's actually working? When I start how long should I let the TS burn?

You can usually watch the thermostart igniter operate if you remove the intake manifold hose. With the thermostart bottle with ample fuel and the key in TS position it will drip diesel onto the igniter and atomize the fuel. This creates a vapor that is more combustible then straight diesel fuel.

I've used it only a few times as it doesn't get that cold down here...but when I did, I cranked the engine with the decompression handle out until the oil light goes out, and throttle back 2/3rds, turn to TS and count to 5 (about 5 seconds) turn to start, and it fires right off.

Like Mark said, turn the key to the TS position. That allows fuel to reach the TS element in the intake manifold. Depends on your location as to how long to leave it engaged. And yes, the fuel will burn, it is NOT a glow plug. Don't believe me? Just remove the air cleaner cover and activate the TS. Burn baby burn.

A quik check , is to pull the wire and check from the terminal to ground. If it is open it is burned out. If that checks and you don't get a fire as descibed in the other posts. Take it out and soak it with something like Sea Foam. That will loosen the valve that lets the fuel in when it gets hot.

Everyone in commneting on one type of TS system and some Yanmars just use conviential glow plugs as does my F series tractor.

Seems like we would need to know what model Cord owns before accurate comments can be offered.

As I recall, Cord has a YM1110 and the TS system is typical of the drip-igniter setup. But your right, I was assuming we're talking about that particualr tractor.

On my 1602D, the thermostart has a timer - so I usually leave the switch in the TS position till the light goes out, then crank her up. The manual says the throttle should be wide open, and I always crank it back immediately to a high idle when it starts - which it always does, easily BTW.

which light goes out? I don't think that 1601 has something like this, is this unique to the 1602?

In this pic, it's the red light just left of the ign switch........
I couldn't tell you if it's unique to the 1602 vs the 1601. I would think they'd be the same..........

Yep, we're talking about my little 1110. I was planing on checking the system this past weekend, but there are some pending family issues which demand my attention.

My tractor has the little return bottle on top of the engine. I havn't checked it lately, but I thought it was empty. Is that correct?

My tractor doesn't have the light.

On mine the bottle is filled from the return line off the injectors, so it has to run a bit to fill it; or you'll have to pop the top off and "prime" the system by filling it up first to get it started..

If its like my 1700 you have to fill it, as it doesn't have a return line on it to do that. But its not that much of a problem. Just watch it and fill as needed.

Yes, u have to fill my 2210 also. It last a very long time. It last so long that I add a drop of fuel extender to it now and then....
