Thermostat for Fuel Fired Portable Heater With a START contact

Anybody ever heard of such an animal? I have a couple of VAL 6 heaters, one of which I am selling to a nursery. He was saying, he wants to control it with a thermostat, which it doesn't have.

It has an on/off switch and a Start switch. You must press that to engage the internal safety relays. I could build a sequencer, but don't have time.

Has anybody ever seen a stat that closes a contact calling for heat, but then momentarily closes another contact?

You could use a time delay relay in the start circuit.

If you can't leave the power switch on all the time, then simply start and stop the system by closing the "start" circuit with a thermostat, then you might be able to use two thermostats. One would turn on the power and the other, set a few degrees lower, would close the "start" circuit. When the first one was satisfied it would cut power to the system and the sequence would start over as the temp dropped.

Use line volt thermostats and no relays are needed.

Have thermostat run a double pole double throw (DPDT) relay. One pole operates the "run" aspect, the other pole operates a one-shot timer for X seconds for the "start" process. Check Altronix.com for a variety of relays and timers. You can put this together with off-the-shelf parts.

That's a good plan. The OP can get an electric heat thermostat (220 volt, double pole) that is also programmable. Lux is one brand that I know of and they are relatively cheap. Non-programmable ones are only about 20 bux. I don't know why he might need double throw. The time delay relay would be a nice momentary button push.
