Where do I begin.....
Well, THIS SHAFT doesn't involve Richard Roundtree OR Issac Hayes. (Good ol' movie!)

Todays project. Restore the PTO shaft from my KK tiller to its former glory. The slip clutch is just about ready for retirement. Too many hours with too much HP being applied. The replacement came from Ebay. First stop will be the John Deere dealer just up the road. They've got a selection of "generic" pto shaft guards. The old one is toast.

All parts included, I can revamp this one for around $85. New shaft is $189 (cheapest I found locally)

Let's get started!

I aughtta work for the government! WAY over budget before I ever FIXED a blasted thing! Deere dealer had plastic shield. Didn't have plastic "bearing". TSC 9 miles further on did. NEW, the shaft sells for $189 and change. I'm up to $112.

But it's fixed ;)

I was planning on a couple more pictures, but this wasn't the cleanest job I've done in a while. Old, BLACK grease, dirt, and some scattered rust. No place for a camera.

To be honest, I didn't think the old one looked that bad. Yeah, the plastic cover was broken, but I problably would have taken that off anyhow. Maybe some new u-joints and clutch discs, paint, would have been good as new.

A new friction disc for the slip clutch and one u-joint was over 1/2 what I paid for the entire assembly. Now I have spare parts too. The old clutch had been smoked. Mating surface turned blue on front casting.

My insurance agent is sorta nit-picky about safey shields and guards.

Winter, I was bored.

I feel your pain, ' that's my life also. I've gotten into more repairs that cost more than a new replacement and it don't even matter what the article is because this applies to every thing that gets busted. One vendor that I've taken a liking to though is Agri Supply. They were the cheapest on that slip clutch and pretty knowlegable people too. bjr
