Thieves stole the battery for my mighty mule gate opener. I have now chained the battery to the fence but I want to find a lockable metal box to bolt to the fence post. Any ideas where to find one?

Aside from mighty mule which is pricey... I buy mine at the local alarm wholesale house or the local Ace Hardware...

You can also buy online and Grainger.

you can also build your own :). I needed a locking battery box for my new gooseneck trailer. The company wanted $300.00 for it. I build one for about $20 in 16 gage steel.

Look around for use equipment (Industrial equipment) electrical contractors & ask about spare control boxes to the right size.

why not think outside the box and consider something like a camo 55 gallon drum? Or a plastic one buried in the ground...those suckers are crafty, have to beat them at their own game. I'm sure others have better suggestions...just fodder to consider.

not sure you can bury a battery......unless you can vent it to the outside. the hydrogen gas could be a problem.

dont you just hate thieves.......we need to shoot them in the back...as uncle fester used to say

yes I do....and your caution about gases is warranted and I don't know enough about them to know if it would work...but I do know that if it really issue, it wouldn't be that difficult to plumb a PVC vent into it that would be rain proof.

Hate'em....I'd like to shoot and ask questions later....

I would love to catch them in the act, thieves make me sick. I am looking at buying a mig welder, maybe a homemade box would make a good first project. Thanks for the input.

i made mine using a box brake, but you can just as easily make all the sides independent and MIG weld them. The one i made also had a heavier duty (3/16") rear plate and support plate to support the weight of the battery in a moving trailer situation. you wouldn't need to do that

What about pouring a pad, and building a heavy wooden box that is attached to the pad.
It would keep the battery in place, the box you could put a planter on top of it, or even build a false bottom into it and make it look like a planter.
