1974 MF135
I have finally saved up enough money to fix up my great grandfathers 135 he left me. tractor runs great as far as I am concerned. I have probably only put 30 hours on it in the 2 years I have had it and most are from bushhogging my small 2 acre field. It gets use in the fall for discing food plots and the ocassional box blade work. It leads a very calm life, but I want it to last.

So my question is, what things should I look at repairing or replacing? There is a wiring problem as the battery will run down. The power sterring hoses need replaced. New tires for the front, rear recieved new last fall. Lift hydralic seams fine although it will drift down after the engine is shut off. PTO seal leak. Other than that I have no complaints. It runs great.

But what am I over looking?

Diesel or gasser? Standard or Deluxe model? Does you tractor have MultiPower?
My 1964 MF135 is a Deluxe diesel with MP.
The battery drain could be caused by a short in the sending unit in the fuel gauge.
Keep the radiator fins cleared of debris (mine was packed with crap when I got it--took me a day to clean it out so there was adequate air flow through the radiator core).
Make sure your oil pressure gauge is working--you can mess up that engine quickly if the pressure drops to zero while you're running it.

Sorry, 135 Diesel, Deluxe I think, No Muti Power. Thanks I will check into those things.

It's a Deluxe if it has the full set of gauges (temp, oil pressure, water temp, ammeter, fuel, tach/hour meter). The Special only has water temp and oil pressure.

Then yes it is the deluxe model.

I have a 135 gasser so I can't tell you much about your motor. The wiring is something I replaced most of (so little of it) because the shielding was old and brittle, didn't want to be facing an issue in the woods or during winter months. Common things to look at might include starter brushes, condition of your rad (dirt can bend the fins, a little patience and needle nose pliers will ensure good airflow thru your rad), inspecting fluids for moisture, condition of the upper link gasket, gear shift rubber boots, brake pads etc.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with the history of the tractor, I know you said it had been your great grandfathers. Really just a good once over will give you an idea how far you might need to look, sounds like you haven't noticed anything with the hydraulics and the motor is running good, should just need a little preventative maintenance.

One other thing--the 135 has a small diameter weep hole in the bottom of the clutch housing. Generally it's clogged with crud. Get a length of wire and ream out that hole. If you get a few drops of engine oil, no problem. If you get more than that, you might have a leaking rear main seal in that Perkins diesel.

It's a fairly common problem with old iron like you and I have. IIRC you can replace this seal without having to split the tractor, but you have to remove the bottom cover on the engine (the oil pan) which is a heavy casting (since it's part of the main structure of the tractor). I may have to do this to my 135 before long since I have some engine oil leaks. That work is on the back burner while I attend to other long overdue projects. I'm not looking forward to lying on my back under that 135.

Good post, made me go out take a look at mine. Hadn't noticed the weep hole there before, I'm lucky that mine hasn't started to use much oil but it's a good place to help diagnose future problems.

G'day they are almost bulletproof engines with the hours you are doing i would change the oil & filter every 2 years, clean air, fuel, oil and most importantly good coolant ( you would be changing it out on time not hours worked) and the little perk should see you through many years good service. As far as the rest goes you may want to change the trans/rear every 5 - 6 years or if the oil goes milky and there will be a small strainer in the bottom of the trans ( not sure how to get to yours but someone here will know) as far as the lift dropping when you turn the engine off dont worry they all do it. Drive and enjoy:thumbsup:

Good advice here.

I would add new shifter boots to prevent water from entering the transmission. Cheap and easy to replace.
