I am considering buying a 1996 MF 240S. The Price is $10,000. The unit is extremely clean and has about 396 hours. How is parts availability for this model? Is it a good tractor? Can I add a FEL, and what brand (loader) do you guys recommend? Does this tractor have enough HP to run a small square baler? Please let me know. As always, Thanks.

I have an older 240 made in 1983 It is an extremely ruggedly built unit, and gives little trouble. I have found that for parts, you need to go to an MF dealer. unlike a lot of other makes, your local CarQuest won't stock much for it except filters mabye. I put remote hydraulics on mine by using an isolator/selector valve which will set you back about $100 or so. This works well, but for a FEL the speed will be very slow, but better than nothing. The price they're asking doesn't seem too bad. I paid $6500 and mine has almost 3000 hrs. on the clock

Hey, I was just thinking about your remote hydraulics and happened to remember that the 240's were available with a factory installed secondary hyd. pump that was used in conjunction with the 3 pt hitch. pump when the quadrant was in the "constant pumping" mode. This combination provides 16 GPM which would give great loder speed. Mine does not have this feature, but on the '96 model you're looking at, this may be standard. I'm not sure, mabye someone else would know. I don't farm, so I can't help you out with the square bailer question, however with LPTO there is really no limit to what you can do, it just depends on how big of a hurry you're in! All in all, I don't think you'd be dissappointed with a 240. Mine seems to be a good basic tractor thats easy to operate and maintaine

This is a very solid tractor that would never know that a square baler was behind it . As for the loader I dont know how happy you would be but hp wise this is a good tractor.
