What’s the thinnest crops any of you have ever bothered to cut and bale? Interested to know if anyone else bothers cutting they little grass

Been told today I was mad for cutting a field when I did! Grass was barely to the top of your boots in some parts but had all gone to head thanks to the hot weather we’ve had lately. Normally we get around 75-100 small bales off this piece.
Only decided to do it in the hope of a half decent second cut and grass is scarce this year already!
Be baling it tomorrow at just under an acre be interested to see how much is there but I’m not hopeful for much.

Perhaps not to bale, but to control weeds. I've a 10 acre field with a thin second cut. I waiting to just mow it for weed control.

I still cut what's left of my hair, but I don't bother to bale it. It's pretty thin, but that's probably not what you meant.

Run with what you got I say...

Tell you naysayers that it does not really matter; hay costs are proportional to the amount of grass grown. If it is thin, you spend less money on fuel and baling twine, so what does it matter?

Land that gave one 4x4 bale per acre.

That is pretty darn thin. I average (7) 4x5 bales per acre here, but a bale of hay is better than no bales of hay, because come January, there is even less hay growing! :)

The grass is pretty thin this year though, at least here in Maine. I mow the sides of the road and even where the grass typically is the thickest, I am traveling 2 gears higher than last year!

Well baled the field last night and got 21 square bales off of hay off it weighing in at about 50lbs each

Done some fields that were 10 4x4 an acre, some that were 2 4x4 and acre. Unimproved land yielding very poor.

If it痴 really high quality then I would think worthwhile. It also may create a better situation for the next cutting. It sounds like your situation required it.
