Noob question...I'm one of those guys who doesn't mind asking when he doesn't understand something.

The NX4510 comes standard with a 'single remote hydraulic valve'. Is a remote hydraulic valve the same as a third function valve? I think they are not, but looking for someone more educated to confirm or deny. If I have it right, a remote valve allows you to add a broad capability to the tractor (e.g. a backhoe), but the third function valve adds, well, function to an existing capability (e.g. a third dimension if you will to a grapple...up/down, tilt, open/close). In my grapple example a remote valve would allow you to add another grapple to the rear of the tractor, but you'd still only have two dimensions (up/down, tilt), whereas a third function would allow open/close. Hope my notional example makes sense. Not saying one would need a second grapple at the rear or anything like that.

BL, if I get the NX4510 and want to use a grapple, even though it comes standard with a single remote hydraulic valve, that wouldn't help me...I'd still need a third function valve to fully utilize the grapple. Sound right?

Thank you.

A third spool valve can be used to open and close a grapple or perform other in out functions.

A backhoe will have it's own set of valves and requires a power beyond connection to operate.

The third function valve is typically actuated by a thumb switch which is added to the loader's joy stick. There are quick connect couplers mounted at the bucket end of the loader for use with front attachments. Alternately, you can route hoses from your rear remote up to the front of the loader to use with a grapple, using the control valve for the rear remote to attenuate the grapple. There are also diverter valves that share the functions of the front loader but that seems to be not as convenient or popular. I ordered the third function valve when I bought mine at a cost of $1,1000 and really like it with my grapple.

Here is a pretty good video that compares options:
