but a thread about specific brands.

As in, what specific brands are known to be the best choices for a small homeowner uses? Mowing, tilling, landscaping.

Are any known to be hard to do your own routine maintenance on?

Any known to have more trouble than others?

I guess the question is ..."what brand(s) would you feel most comfortable with and why?"

My preferred choice at the present is Kubota though we also own a John Deere, but it is not because of reliability. I personally would be comfortable with any of the top brands, John Deere, Kubota, Kioti/Bobcat, NH/Case etc. None of them that I know of make a bad tractor.

The "best tractor" is the one that fits you with good dealer support.

I wouldn't fault any of the top brand tractors for quality, reliability, or ease of maintenance. I do have preferences for the way the controls are set up on different tractors and the way they operate. Test driving different brands can be an eye opening experience. It was for me.

The responses so far are spot on. Heed their advice.

I'll repeat....Try them all on for size and fit.

I feel there are a lot of good values in tractors for sale today. The work they will do for you is priceless. It sounds to me like you are either in the compact or sub-compact market.

How big an area are you mowing and tilling.??

Fill the boys in and they will fill you up. Lots of great advice here at TBN.

Mowing about 2.5 acres. Tilling a garden, some tilling for landscaping and redoing the lawn too...garden fairly good size, say 30x40ft.

I'll definitely try several out. Kubota and Cub Cadet, Mahindra and Deere are all withing "reasonable" driving range

Hate to pile on, but like others have already said, I'm not aware of any "bad" makes within the large manufacturers.

They all have their pluses and minuses.

One thing is for sure though, some brands still have much easier resale than others.

It's just easier to sell, for the most part, a Kubota or Deere, everyone knows of them, even the most novice of buyers.

Maybe adding to that is the seeming reluctance of Kioti and Mahandra and other lesser known brand owners to sell their machines, adding to the lack of general knowledge.

This topic has been beaten to death a number of times already though.

For each owner, there is likely a slightly different answer as to why they chose their machine.

Sounds like most of what you will be doing is mowing. I have been very satisfied with the Deere X749 and it can handle the other tasks you mentioned too.

Could be...seem to be leaning to green or orange. Talked with the yellow guy too and sat on some yellow tractors. Tractor seemed OK, but got a weird feeling from the sales guy...hard to describe, just didn't get the greatest feeling. Of course, the green guy didn't seem terribly interested. Maybe yellow wanted it TOO bad, and green doesn't seem to want it enough. LOL...its like Goldilocks and the tractor sales. This tractor is too big, this tractor is too small, this tractor is just right....
