I've been lurking on & off for several years. A recent purchase of the tractor in the picture to the left has had me scouring these boards for all kinds of advice over the last month ~ 6 weeks. I learned what the previous owner didn't know (or perhaps didn't care) about changing fuel pump lubricating oil (first thing I did after having it delivered and just in the nick of time too from the appearance of, and low volume of oil that came out the drain hole). Also found I've probably been idling to low when not in use @ 1,000 RPM.

The tractor's main use will be to clean up ~ 20 years worth of deadfall on ~30 acres of rolling mostly wooded land, bringing out standing dead ash to sell as firewood, and then harvesting some timber. Eventually, hopefully within 5 years, an apple orchard will begin to take shape on the land. After the 3 weeks of use I think it's the perfect size and power tractor for my needs. I'll get some pics of the tractor working this weekend to post here.

My tractor before this was a very tired 9n. It served me well but the 4 WD on the new to me rig is priceless for the terrain and climate we'll be working on & in.

I have a ton of questions, but thought first I'd better say hello.

"Hello"

Thanks, and I hear you about the $$.

There's a thread out there where a guy took his ugly duckling 1700 and converted to a beautiful swan. I keep telling myself I'm not going there, I bought this tractor to for work, not show. It is awful tempting though when I see how well his turned out

Now comes the attachments. What are you going to use to clear the land?
Rotary /bush hog mower, grapple would be nice on the wish list. Me and my pocket book have settled on a set of forks for moving brush and logs. If you're cutting tress, the best thing I ever bought was a 3 pt winch. With a snatch block you can get trees from anywhere and make them fall in any direction. But, direction doesn't matter, cause you can just pull them out.

Have been taking what I have learned here and watching Craiglist for a bush hog. That's # 1 one the list. 2nd will be a back / or box blade. Still studying the virtues of each.

I've been working on the dead ash and dead fall for three winters now using my Jeep, a couple Husqvarna saws, a 5' x 10' single axle trailer, and a boat load of elbow grease. Took out 11 federal cord of firewood this winter and it's gotten to the point the Jeep just can't get to where I need to work anymore.

I think the winch block will come into the picture when I start going after the timber trees as I'll want to take them out of the woods in 16' 4" lengths as opposed to the 8' lengths of firewood. Getting them oriented right when felled will be a time saver. But time I have, money, not so much ;)
