I have no doubts as to whether or not it's true. Her brother in law's family owns a farm that is not far from the plant in Batesburg-Leesville, where we both work at. They mainly grow asparagus and also have some peach orchards. Last Monday evening her B-i-L was plowing some of the fields with an Allis Chalmers 180 pulling a pull behind disc harrow. He had stopped to get off and do something with the disc harrow, though she didn't know what exactly what. I know she said he did something with the hydraulic lines, but it sounded like he was disconnecting the harrow. A moment later he walked back around to shut off the engine on the tractor, but reaching with his arm he accidentally knocked it in gear and it started off.
He was so close to the left rear tire, that it knocked him down and literally rolled over him before with no chance to get out of it's way. He was mostly facing away from the tire when it started, so it actually rolled up and over his back, and then rolled over the back of his head!!!
The victim was unable to move right away, I am guessing from the pain, the shock, and just being stunned about what had just happened. The tractor kept going, and somehow it began a slow, steady but fairly sharp left turn. He later told them it actually circled around and he feared it was going to run over him again! But, after making a near complete circle, it hit a pole (don't know what *kind* of pole) and stopped not very far from where he lay at.
After a few minutes, he was able to get his cell phone out, which fortunately didn't get damaged, and call 911. He then called a family member to come out and help him. He was rushed to the nearest hospital and diagnosed with 3 broken ribs, and a punctured lung. He also had some bruising, soreness, and cuts on his face because he was wearing glasses that broke when the tire rolled over him and the broken lenses cut him. He was released after spending a couple days in the hospital and is recovering pretty well considering what happened. The doctors speculated that because he was laying in soft, freshly plowed soil, it compacted when he was pressed down into it which probably helped avoid worse crushing injuries. Sorry, no pictures and I don't think it made the news, at least I have seen no articles about it locally.
Don't need to say it, but I will.... he's a VERY lucky man!!
