I just ordered a 3 pt. chipper.
I don't want to bring the "safety patrol" down on anyone ; so answer answer if you feel comfortable.
What do most do about keeping the pto running while off the tractor ?
I've already "solved" it but I was just curious.
The Dlr. said the "chipper company" would not supply a person to feed the machine while I remained in the seat. lol

I will be honest the seat switch was the first thing i bypassed. i hate the dam thing you can't even adjust your pants to keep johny breathing and the thing would die. I gess i could have put a toggel switch for a temp by pass, but i didn't and i don't care what any one thinks. Safety is more thinking than switches, pepole now will get used to a device to protect them and when it fails blame the manufacturer, faulty equipment not faulty brain.

Did you try flipping up the seat. I thought many of the tractors with seat safety switches will by pass when you flip the seat forward. Have you tried that. I know it works with a Kubota. I can't speak for the Cub. Hope that helps.

I just set a big rock in the seat. Where I work there are lots of rocks so it is no problem to grab one when I need it.

On mine I have to flip the seat forward the reach over the fender to engage the PTO and set the throttle. I do this when using my Bearcat chipper,

Per the manual, one flips the seat up, rotates a bracket to the "up" position, then pulls the seat safety switch to the "up" detent.
Then, one lowers the seat to the raised bracket and starts the tractor as usual.
The Range selector goes in Neutral and the gear shift goes in 2nd or third (keeps the tranny lubricated).
Then, at a low RPM, one engages the PTO an climbs off the tractor.
Of course, then you up the RPM to what you think you need for the task at hand.

This is a gear tractor. Now, I've no implements that require off seat usage of the PTO at this time.

But...that's how you do it on a Deere 670, 770 and probably 790.

Graybeard,

Just like Roy mentioned, Deere has setup where you can run the PTO when you are not in the saddle. It sounds pretty similar between the gear tractors and the hydros. I just put my 4110 in neutral, lift the seat, pull up on the dead man switch to the detent position, and rest the seat back on a wire frame support that flips up. Other tractors I have used simply require the seat to be tilted foreward off of the switch. Wonder if your CC had that setup? FWIW, I don't mind the thought of having a functioning dead-man on the PTO when I am riding.

Wire cutters & a wire nut, that switch garbage wouldn't last on my tractor for 10 minutes. What are they thinking???? Will they sell sissors without blades next?

I did try the rock but it takes a big one to make the switch.
I did not try flipping the seat. (no mention in the book)
The parking brake safety runs thru the seat also.
To that end , it's nice not to have the brakes locked while running the hoe. I can push or pull with the back hoe while operating.
Thanks, GrayBeard

Scissors have a built in dead-man... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The dead-man principle was instituted with the first locomotives. For most modern machines, the set up is practical and does not need to be bypassed. I agree that not all tractors are created equal, though.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
