Thought you JD boys might like to see this mailbox?

Driving through Frederick MD last week, I came across this unique mailbox at the side of the road.... thought you JD boys might like to see it....

I'd sure like one of those, but I don't think it would last long around here. Some high school kids think it's great fun to ride around with baseball bats bashing mailboxes. The post office told me that they demolished two hundred last month.

One of my co-workers fixed that problem, by using one on those really large mailboxes and he set a normal sized mailbox inside and centered it. He filled the outside perimeter with concrete, then set that on the post. He has only seen one small dent in the outer sheet metal since then. He figures those kids got the message.

Ditto here. Too bad, but this would be like a big magnet/invitation to some kids around these parts. That's why I buy the cheapest boxes because avg life is between 1 and 2 years.

If I had a mailbox like that, I would have to pitch a tent out by the road and stand guard for it. I did the double mailbox thing and it has held up for 6 years now. Previous best was 2 years.

After losing a couple of mailboxes to vandals, we took a different tact. Mounted the mailbox to two big springs - I think they were designed for a hayrake - so when it gets hit, it just wobbles side to side. Five years later it lists slightly to port, but hasn't had a problem.

I will admit, it was the post box outside a JD dealership so it was as much as an advertisement for the business as it was a post box.
