Does anyone know if the threads on the average tie rod cylinders are universal? and what they might be?

I have a tie rod cylinder I got from Nothern tool....and to be able to use the same cylinder on a couple of different applications I would need to extend the length of the rod by an inch or two...

...I was thinking I might be able to use a threaded coupling (Galv. pipe maybe?) and a cut off bolt etc...the rod is 1-1/8"

use a thread pitch gauge on it..

are you thinking it is NPT? I noticed you mentioned a pipe coupling..

just guessing/hoping...it looks like it could be NTP...

I'm ignorant of the thread pitch guage ???

I'm not opposed to using tap and dies although I have never worked with such large stock...

they cost like 5$ each for sae and metric.. lil feeler gauges with swing out wings with multi thread pitch feelrs on them you decide whay you got.. can get ID and OD gauges.. as well as bolt and hole gauges..

9 times out of 10 it will be sae fine threads, the diameter of the threaded shaft. Ken Sweet

I am not sure what threads you are talking about. Are you talking about the hydraulic ports???? Cause them are the only ones that would ever be NPT. But they could also be and o-ring fitting as well and they are not interchangeable.

But it seems that you are talking about the end of the "rod" itself. The part that a clevis/yoke of what not would thread onto. These are most deffinatally NOT NPT. But they are likely fine thread by whatever the diameter of the rod is.

If you don't have/like a pitch guage, you can use a tap of even another bolt and match up the pitch just like a guage. Might not give you the diameter but it will give you the TPI.

Thanks, I will look for a pitch guage...sounds like a good tool to have...

the threads I'm referring to are on the end of the rod where the yoke threads on...

We have a local hardware store that just might have a SAE fine bolt in that size if I'm lucky...otherwise I might try cutting one myself...the coupler may be a different story...

if it becomes too much of a job I'll just spring for another cylinder and hoses and QD ends...

thanks for the replies

Typically rods 1.125 and up are 12 TPI......

IE: 1.125-12

1.250-12

1.375-12

1.500-12

If smaller than 1.125.....then it differs.....1.00-14.......875-14....... .750-16.......625-18......

thanks...this measured 1-1/8" (1.125)

Maybe I can find a local machinist that can turn me out a female/male extension ?
