Here are the pics. The backbone is missing. It broke at an old weld at the "T" where the third point of the hitch attaches.

Should this be with another thread ?? Seems this one comes out of the blue and really relates to something ongoing. Or am I missing something? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Sorry...Not really out of the blue. I couldn't find a way to attach pictures to a reply via the private email on our profiles. This was just the quickest way to get these pictures to TIMB.

Besides, I needed the practice resizing and posting pictures on TBN. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What happened was I noticed Kevin listed a 3-bottom plow in his profile, along with his JD 4710. I was curious as to how big that plow was, and how well his 4710 pulled it.

Can't tell if it's a 3x12, 3x14, or 3x16 in the pics yet, but I'd say that's a pretty good pull in any case for a CUT.

(Especially for a hydro! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks
I'm caught up now, I think /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'd be real curious as to how that plow would work hooked to a 3pt, and how it could possibly be adjusted to do a decent job plowing. Not that I doubt it can be done, but real curious.

Seems the 3pt drawbar slipped in there is way too high to pull the plow without it putting undue compression on the top arm. But that is just a 'feeling' without knowing.

Would you have some pics of it hooked up and in the ground?

Or will you be getting it repaired and in the ground yet this fall or not until Spring?

Anxious to see how it turns out, and apologize for horning in on your thread with TIMB /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Must be the "backbone" is the top link?

Several things. 1st. The drawbar obviously is a 3-point drawbar that has been "adapted" to the plow. On a factory-built plow drawbar, there would be an offset at each end to make the plow run level whit one wheel of the tractor in the plowed furrow. (from the previous round)

Generally, plows will run about half as deep as the width of the bottom. The "shins" on that plow look mighty tall. I'd say it's a 16" bottom.

I'm at a loss as to what brand of plow that is. If I was to bet, I'd say it's an Allis Chalmers, but could be a Case. It COULD be an A-C "Snap-Coupler" plow from the WD-45/D-15,17,19 days. If that was the case, there was no top link "mast".

BUT.... That would be a VERY easy plow to convert to 3-point hitch. If it's a 3X16" plow, you PROBABLY will need 55 or 60 HP (at the minimum) to drag it through "average" soils. (At a depth it was intended to plow at) In addition, I'd say you would need 6000lbs (+) (again, in "average" soils)

See if you can identify the plows manufacturer.

(I've got 2 different 3-botton plows right now, one John Deere model 416A and one Ford model 101) Did I mention I have this "thing" for old plows?

Plow is a Farmall Fast Hitch 3 bottom plow that someone has cut the 2 Fast Hitch arms off. I had one for my Farmall 340. Had to remove one of the plows. Tractor could not pull three. Attached is a old ad of a Fast Hitch Plow.

Yep! You're right! I was thinking A-C or Case because of what I saw as "Orange" paint, but since you mentioned IH, it started looking faded red. Looke like IH "Super Chief" bottoms now that you mention it. Good catch!

Been to your Mundfordville shop a few times. You've got a nice variety of equipment. In fact, I've rubbed elbows with you at a few sales over the years. I hit a BUNCH of auctions during the winter.

I've got a couple 3 bottom plows now, and a couple 2 bottoms. I'll do about anything to come up with an excuse to roll some sod over. Just not as many reasons these days. (I grow about 2o acres of ear corn (for feed) every year. The last 10, I've no-tilled that.

I'm not all that far from your place, in the grand scheme of things. I live just east of Mt. Washington, almost with-in sight of the new Hartland Equipment Deere dealership. (former sight of D&J Equipment)

Next time you're coming up this way for a sale, give me a shout. (Just don't be bidding against me! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

"That would be a VERY easy plow to convert to 3-point hitch"

I was wondering if he could just use a chain for the top link to give it a try-out.

I think, like most ground engaging attachments, that the top link is in compression when at plowing depth. I believe that is how depth control works, by being sensitive to the compression when engaging 'hard-to-plow' ground (or too deep) and the depth control raising the plow enough to relieve that 'compression' on the top link.

The 3pt drawbar bolted to this plow appears to be way inside the furrow plow, making it unlikely the right wheel would run in the furrow. Maybe this works this way but it just looked a bit awry. I'd like to see a pic of the plow hooked to the tractor.

We usually hit Bowling Green and Scottsville, Ky auctions. Are these some that you go to? I sent a employee to Scottsville last Sat and he said prices were crazy high about across the board.
We had a couple local bank owners from Mt Washington. Seem to be good business people.
I wont be bidding aganist you on plows as we have already reached our limit of 70 units for the next spring season.
When you are thru Hart County, stop by our Canmer, Ky store. We are only 10-15 minutes east of the Munfordville location and have lots more inventory to look at /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif--Ken Sweet

I've been to the Scottsville sale a few times. Seems like I heard you bidding at the FFA sale at Hardin county last year. Anyway...

Next trip your way, I'll stop in and introduce myself properly.

/ Three Bottom Plow for TIMB #17
Beenthere's right. That top link would be in compression when plowing. The original "Ferguson System" 3-point used that compression to "read" the draft load.

Still, that plow could be easily converted.

We bought a few pieces at that FFA sale last year and did not get to go this year. Look foreward to meeting you also.

I agree the toplink and A mast on the plow is for compression and draft control, however, if this plow was originally a 2 point hitch Farmall/IH, It probably depended on the hydraulic down pressure of the Farmall lift to keep the plow in the ground?--Ken Sweet

Wow! This forum is amazing. I post a couple of picture of an old rusted hulk of an implement, with pieces missing, and a few guys have it identified and know of the
missing parts! Here are some pictures to clear up the details.

Here is the offset drawbar which also broke at an old weld on one of the pins. Yes, I "modified" it using what I had on hand, which is a straight drawbar.
