The basic concept seems to be pretty much universal, but how compatible are various 3 point hitch configurations across different tractor brands, such as Massey & JD, or Massey & Kubota for example?
There are standards for 3 pt hitches, different dimensions by category (Cat 1, 2, 3, 4) of hitch. Is that what you are asking?
They hook the tractor to a PTO Dynometer and see how much power it puts out. Its generally 1-5HP less than engine HP to account for losses in the transmission.A related question: I see "PTO Horsepower" mentioned when describing various attachments. How is that derived and how does that relate to overall engine HP?
Here is the specs on the MF 1652 - the HP ratings down on the right side.

I see they rate the PTO Power as "claimed". I assume that's the dealer's claim. I'd think that would be good guide to start from in looking at equipment. Thanks for the info.
Massey Ferguson 1652 Power:
Engine (gross): 52.2 hp [38.9 kW]
PTO (claimed): 41 hp [30.6 kW] (gear)
39.4 hp [29.4 kW] (hydro)
