How big is the room?
The most common pattern besides going straight with them is to put them in as a diamond pattern. You can either run them right to the walls, or outline the walls with a straight run, then diamond in the middle.
One thing to be concerned about with smaller rooms is that you can make it too busy in there. If you use a tile with allot of character, it can really get overpowering.
If you have the space, you can always create a medalion or design in the middle and then lay the tile around it straight.
Also make sure that you don't do something too radicaly in case you ever decide to sell the house. People like tile, but don't like to buy something too far outside the norm. This could affect the price of the house if a potential buyer hates it and wants to use redoing it as a bargaining chip to lower the price.
