Kubota Bx24, 2007
Hi. I bought a new chinese tiller on a internet acution. Well I know what you think...and I think the same;)
I should mention that I never tilled before. My plan was to till new land, after removing trees big, stones etc. Insted of filling up with new earth I use my tiller to get the earth movable. Areas of this kind usally contain hidden stones under the surface. On my tiller I havnt found any breakpin, instead I have broke the chain twice... this happens when the tiller hit a big stone.

So maybe their isnt any breakpins on tillers or my tiller is....well....chinese (bad copy)?

What happens if you run into a big stone with an orginal kubota tiller?

I am pretty sure there is a shear pin somewhere. If you really cant find it, perhaps you should install a slip clutch on the tiller pto. Its no fun to break open your BX hydrotransmission to fix the pto shaft/clutches/gears inside.

Radioman, ok will look ever closer if I can find a shear pin...
The first chain (chinese) lasted for 10 minuts. The second ones of good quality lasted for 20 minuts... The shearpin should have broke by that time?

The slip clutch, is that something which sits on the pto shaft between the tiller and the tractor?

A slip clutch will mount between the PTO shaft and the tiller. You can buy a new PTO shaft with one installed. Just curious is the pto shaft mounted to the tiller gear box with a spline shaft or shaft with a key and bolt or just a bolt. If just a bolt that bolt should shear. Be sure someone didn't put a grade 8 bolt there or something. Also at that point pull the bolt and make sure the shaft will spin on the shaft and isn't rusted solid.

Oldtractorfixer is totally right. Get a PTO with slip clutch to absorb any hard knocks. I have vast experience with Chinese product and I know that one brand I used to sell always turned up with no shear protection anywhere on the tiller. That's no good for a tiller. So thats probably why you are having trouble. Get a new PTO with shear protection or slip clutch. Slip clutch can be expensive but cheaper than fixing damage that will happen with no shear / slip protection in your tiller.

Just out of curiosity, how much did you "save" by purchasing this tiller versus a known-quality brand (e.g. Land Pride)?

The reason I ask is that the slip-clutch PTO shaft will not be inexpensive (typically around US$400 or so), and you have already broken two chains (with attendant tiller downtime as well).

I was also wondering this :)
I hope it was cheap so that you can cover the PTO etc.
