In 1996, I bought a 60" Lely tiller. I have used it on a Farmall Super MTA, a John Deere 630 and an International 2444. Never had a problem.

In 2004 I bought a new New Holland 40hp Boomer. Whenever I try to use it with the Boomer, it shakes from side to side. I have the pins in place on the 2 bottom arms to make sure they are locked in place but that does not help.

The Lely is they type with vertical "egg beaters", not the rotary type you see today.

It was several years after I bought the Boomer that I first tried it on the Boomer, so it could have developed a problem and may have nothing to do with the tractor I am using. Unfortunately, the Boomer is the only tractor I now own with a 3-pt, so testing it on another tractor is not an option.

Suggestions?

Thanks

Not familiar with the tiller in question but it sounds like an imbalance problem to me. Do the verticle shafts oppose each other? Is this running level side to side?

About your tiller-

You own a rotary spader apparently, and there is nothing wrong with it.

I will advise you to first till in a lower gear then;

1. tighten the lower link adjustments by either taking in the chains or turnbuckles if it has them or if the right lower link has a crank to adjust the right lower link, be sure it is fully retracted bringing it in to the same distance as the left lower link is to reduce the swaying and bouncing.

2. inspect the chain drive and if the rollers on the chain are very loose and spin freely on the chain pin you should have the chain replaced.
a. It may simply be a case of adjusting the chain tension which is easily done by removing a chain link and adding a half link or simply adjusting the tension of the roller chain.

You will have to make shallower passes at first and then change the depth setting if the roller chain is worn or sloppy.

Adding gypsum to your soil will break up and dissolve the clay you may be encountering as well.

I too am not familiar with this type of tiller but I do agree that there is an imbalance. If it is verticle I would check the connecting rods if it has them or is it set up like a cam shaft with lobes and springs. I have used the verticle aerators before and they did seem to move up and down when incountering hard soil. You may have something like a bad bearing on the machine thats frozen up. M2cents. Scaper

Wow I just watched a video on You Tube that looks like one mean mother! I have never seen anything like that before. what turns the beaters? Looks like the drive system goes from side to side does it? Boy thats some machine hope you get to the source of the trouble. Scaper

Greetings Scaper,

The rotavator scoops like a shovel and lifts and throws the dirt at the same time it is operated like normal tiller but with a reciprocating crankshaft that lifts and pushes the shovels in the ground and then throws the dirt behind it.

Not wanting to open old wounds, but have you recieved the replacement PTO shaft yet for your snow blower?:thumbsup::
