Pardon my negligence but I neglected to bookmark the thread I am searching. There was on the Yanmar (I think) forum a detailed description of someone modifying a yanmar tiller with slip clutch, longer pto shaft and longer lift arms. Does anyone know where that post might be?

If you haven't bought the slip clutch yet - I suggest don't bother. Assuming you have a Yanmar tiller matched to your Yanmar tractor, they knew what they were doing when they designed them to match. The tiller is light and will simply climb over roots etc. I'm not convinced that we can improve on Yanmar's designs - even if you read here that the first thing every first-time tractor owner does is add a temperature gauge then a slip clutch. On his 'new' tractor that ran 30 years reliably without them. I trust Yanmar's engineering. It simply works.

I run over roots all the time, my work is all in an orchard. No problem.

I agree with California. I have hit roots, rocks, and huge chunks of concrete, and have broken one tine, but no other damage. The rotation of the tiller is such that it simply climbs over the obstacle and bounces you around a bit. Mind you I have not tried to break it, but it seems pretty workable to me.

I guess a slip clutch is a good safety item. Every year before I use my Howard tiller, I perform the slip clutch adjustment recomended in the book, grease and fill the gear oil if needed at the same time. Never in the 6 years of using it has the slip clutch ever moved. I marked witness marks on both sides of this clutch so you can tell just by looking. I'm inclined to think California is on the money with this one. I've hit all sorts of rocks and junk with this 5' tiller, tractor it is on is a 33 hp YM3000. I think the clutch could matter more when more hp is put to the drive of the tiller. But so far, my Yanmar doesn't have the hp to slip the clutch except when setting it after the bolts are loosened. Sure could matter on a larger tractor with twice the hp.
