Hi,
I'm using my 3 pt tiller now but I don't know what speed the PTO should be. I've been running it a max of 2500 rpm on the tach. Is this OK? It seems to handle it and the dirt gets mixed pretty well. thanks, brett w

I would run it at the tractor RPM that is designed to give you a PTO speed of 540 RPM. My TC40D has a light that comes on at PTO 540, and a warning light at PTO 600. I get the PTO 540 light to come on, and tap the throttle back just a little bit. That little decrease in speed seems to make the tiller a bit less agitated back there as it is trying to deal with my clay soil.

When I am mowing, I run the throttle up until the PTO 600 light comes on, and then tap the throttle back just a little bit. The extra speed seems to help with the cutting/shredding.

Most implements are setup to run at ONE of 3 speeds.. 540, 760 and 1000 rpm. Most stuff we CUT and UT and SCUT tractor owners use is 540 based equipment. Every now and then you fina an asian rototiller that will use the 760 pto option.. like yanmar.. etc. And the big AG tractors use some 1000pto stuff.

I'd 'RTM' before I hurt the implement, tractor or myself by guessing..

Your tach should have some sort of mark or indicator of where your pto speed is.

Good point - my experience is a bit "Big-3-Centric", didn't even consider other PTO speeds. I guess he would even have to watch out for reverse-rotation PTOs that are on some models. It would help him to fill out his profile or request specific tractor model information.

When I'm running my tiller, I run full throttle and pay no attention to engine RPM's.
Some may not agree with that, but thats the way I've been doing it for years and plan to keep on doing it that way.
