Tried to till an acre today on my (new to me) JD 755 with a 4 ft tiller. First time. Was like trying to wash a bathtub with a toothbrush. It was wildflowers that I cut down with a brushhog?

How should the settings for the skis be set?

How fast should I be going?

I have notices that if I leave the hydraulic a third from all the way down rather than all the way down I got a slightly better till with less visible waste.

I am trying to prepare the acre for seeding wildflowers and sunflower.

Thanks for humoring me, I am learning this as I go along.

Rob,
Try setting your runners so about 2 inches of the tiller blades are in the ground on the first pass. I am assuming that this ground has not been tilled in a while or ever. 1st cut, go slow. 1st or 2nd gear in low range. Let the tiller take its time cutting. Run your tractor so that your PTO is running at the rated 540 RPM. After you finish your complete 1st till, go ahead and drop your tiller down to about 5 or 6 inches and put your tractor in low gear again. 540 RPM PTO speed. Tilling is one thing you cannot get in a rush on. If you go too fast with your ground speed, either your tiller bounces and pushes your tractor along, or it digs in too deep and stalls the engine out. This is the methos I use for tilling and I get a perfect till every time. I have a JD 790 FWD 30HP with a 25 HP PTO. I run a 60 inch King Kutter II and it does a perfect till every time if I follow this. Let me know if this helped.

I agree. I am in the process of tilling 10 acres and have found out that you just have to take it slow. I am yet to come out of low gear but my King Kutter II is doing one **** of a job. I am truning last years corn fields into sheep pasture.

The 755 has a hydorstatic. So I have been moving at a walking speed. I have more land to till. So I will start at two inches using the hydraulic lift as adjustment and then 6 inches again using the hydraulic lift. This sound right?

Thanks again.

Use the tiller skids as adjustments. The tiller should rest on the ground and the hoes under the ground.
