I have an opportunity to purchase a Rhino ST40 tiller for a good price that I would plan on putting behind my Ford 1300. I think a 47" version might be a bit better, but this is a super deal for me locally. I have some landscape work to do this year (personal, not commercial) and also would do my father in law's garden for him (helps justify the tractor/implement existence with the wife ;-) ).

Any thoughts on the size match? My tractor is rated at 16 engine HP, and is all gear drive (not hydro) if that helps any...

I am assuming the Rhino is a 40" tiller? If so, that may be a better choice for the tractor hp you have (how much PTO HP?). Most on here say 5 PTO hp per foot of tiller....but a little less can work too....you just have to go slower. Also most want to be able to cover the wheel tracks.

Hopefully someone with a similar tractor and a tiller will respond....but I think you would be fine with a 40" tiller.

As far as heft, 1300 @ 1800 lbs should be enough for a 48" max tiller. Although hp is needed it is always overrated. 16 pto hp should drive your tiller under most conditions. Saying that, no tiller can totally pulverize stones and major debris. I have a Ford 1700 and at 25 pto hp and about 2500 lbs can very easily run a 60" KK tiller. I do not have much debris where I have my garden. I yet to run my tractor faster than 2000 rpm to get a good mix , in other words I'm not using full pto hp potential that I have. If you need you might run two passes and gradually increase tilling depth.

I ended up with the ST40. the 40 and 47 by the catalog are for the same horsepower range tractor. I got a good enough deal on the tiller that I'll deal with the 7" less width. I hung it from the 3 pt when I got home, and it looks a little small compared to the tire width, but it should function very well for me. Especially considering I got it for the price of an upper end 4' box blade.

Thanks for the help guys!
