Hello - try to get a feel for what my 770's limitations are. Couldn't find anything in owners manual to tell me how far my 770 can tilt without rollover. I'll probably be operating with 70 loader and 5' rotary mower most of the time. How far can I go without a near- death experience?

On a related note, I've seen some reference on this forum to a "tilt Meter"but I can't find one for sale anywhere. Where can a guy get a tilt meter?

Don't think you will find an answer in the manual, as it is a "seat-of-the-pants" feeling that tells you beyond this point is not comfortable. The "tilt-meter" gives you an idea what angle you are at, but doubt anyone is staring at it while traversing that slope when they are uncomfortable. Obstacles such as hidden rocks, or stumps on the uphill side, and depressions on the downhill side will be things that cause more anticipation and discomfort and are probably the things that cause a roll-over more than just slope.

I'll second beenthere's post. Plus with something in the loader (dirt, gravel, etc.) minor changes in it's height can change the center of gravity drastically. Unfortunately, once the line is crossed, you cannot recover quickly enough as many have found out.

R&B Manufacturing makes tiltmeters. They were a approved supplier on TBN, but I haven't seen any advertisements in quite a while.

Tractors are tested per an ANSI spec (spec number eludes me, but it's probably in your op manual) at a static 20 degrees. I'm not sure how they're laden, but I'd assume it's just the basic tractor (no loader).

Static tests don't always tell you much when the machine is used in a dynamic setting (operating the tractor).

I'll second beenthere's and om21braz' posts. It's not the steady state slope that get's you...it's the sudden transitions (ruts, upslope rocks, etc.).

Best thing you can do is fill your rear tires for greater stability and go slow until you get the lay of the land...after that, use common sense. Remember, a rock or gopher hole that wasn't there last time you mowed might be there the next time.
That's a fixed ROPS on your 770, so always use your seatbelt. Stay off wet grass...slicker then greased owl crap, wet grass.

I'm not sure you can ever get comfortable with slopes. I have cut the front and back side of my dam with all three of my tractors for 15 years. I know for a fact they will hold it but I get tightened up every time. I have an 870 just slightly larger than the 770 and it seems to hold just as well as my larger tractors. Lots of good advice in the posts

That's right...you should never get comfortable with slopes...

Comfortable leads to complacency.
Complacency leads to disaster...

JD15302155870, is your nick your phone number or a list of all the tractors you own?

It's my tractors. All JD and I can't imagine doing without any one of them.

I've long ago decided that I my tractors could take more than I can. I'm the one who chickens out on slopes most of the time. I'm sure the 770 can handle most of what I have on my property (mowing across ditches, etc) but it's hard to know where the limit is until it's too late, as others have mentioned....

Greased owl crap? Now that I haven't seen.

Well, it's not actually called "Greased Owl Crap", but I had to substitute one word to get it posted...
