No doubt that the large round baler is the greatest AG invention in the last 50 years. Below is a list of Hay Equipment rated in order of time saving ability for the "One Man Hay System"
1. Round Hay Baler
2. Large 20'+ Rakes- V-Rake, In-Line Rake, Hydraulic V-Rake
3. Drum & Disc Mowers
4. Tedders

Large Square balers are sold 95% of the time to commercial hay producers. The Average large farmer can not justify $60,000 - $80,000 for a Large Square baler. There is also custom microwave baler that is $500,000 but only 3 have been made. It will cure & bale hay 50% moisture and below.

Because the double action mowers are high maintenance and take an extended time to fix they do not meet the criterion as a time saver. The drum mowers are cheaper, have less moving parts, mow faster, and are more durable than the double action sicklebar mowers. After 20 years of selling the double action sickle bar mowers, the drum mowers have all but replaced the sales of the double action mowers. Our customers find that the linear action and stamped sheet metal guards of the double action just can not keep up with the rotary action of the drum and disc mowers.

I don't know about the drum mowers, but my two year old dual action sickle bar mower mowed just as good as my new disc mower maybe even better. It was a little bit slower in the thick stuff, but I believe it cut it a little better. If I had it to do over I'd take the $4000 I spent on a disc mower and put it on a v rake and a bigger tedder.

Maybe your FORT disc mower needs new blades or is out of adjustment.

I agree with CCI. I've used alot of different sickle mower and you couldn't give me one compared to mowing with a disc mower.

Any time a sickle mower mows just as good as disc mower, something is wrong with the disc.
