Timing Distributor Set John Deere 420 2 cylinder

Hello, I seem to have misplaced my 1958 JD420 IT Shop manual, can anyone look in there manual and tell me the secret to getting the distributor set in the proper spot before tightening down the bolts, or do I need to keep it loose and get it started then adjust it to engine smooth operation?

Can you get a timing light and open up the port hole to the flywheel, and set that way? That is what I recall, but don't remember if set to tdc or advanced a bit.
