Kubota BX23
I just installed my Tiny-Tach diesel tach and have a question. In light of all the "fast idle, engine life, etc" debate here, I was curious about my rpms, but puzzled by my BX23 readings.

At the lowest throttle setting, the RPMs show 1280. At the fastest setting, it shows 3390 rpm. Since the BX23 has it's engine and PTO rated at 3200 rpm, I'm inclined to believe the high reading. However, I'm puzzled by the 1280 rpm on the lowest throttle setting. Do these diesels really idle that fast? Maybe I'm not a good judge of a diesel idle, but it doesn't sound as fast as that to me.

Any comments from other tiny-tach owners, or other owners with built in tachs? Thanks!

I have a 2cyl bx.
I checked my idle with an infrared digital tach. It works by counting revs after you stick a little piece of reflective tape on the flywheela and aim the device at the spinning tape. Dead accurate. Mine said 1380, which I believe to be accurate recommended idle speed for the 2 cyl, which is higher than the 3 cyl, due to vibration levels.
FWIW, my top speed was also 100 rpm higher than the rated hp rpm. I think your mini tach is dead on.

The only aftermarket diesel tach I could find was at www.tinytach.com. It uses a piezo-electric transducer on the fuel injection line to measure the rpms. $65

Mike L - Thanks for confirming the BX rpms!

What size of transducer is proper for the BX series? Is it the 1/4" or the 6mm? Is it possible to remove the factory hour meter and flush mount the Tiny-tach?

Not sure about other Kubota models, but on my BX23, you need the 6 mm transducer. The tach is bigger than the hour meter and won't fit in the hour meter slot unless you expand it. I just stuck it on the top of the dashboard with double sided tape.

I have a TinyTach on my BX2200 but I am not as thrilled with it as some of the posters above. My TinyTach started to lose display segments at two years of use. There is no way to repair it so you have to buy a replacement. Also, it has an internal battery that is not replaceable with a life expectancy of five years. After five years you have to buy a new TinyTach.

I think that they should have at least made the battery replaceable.
