Tip for hooking up PTO shaft. Drop a dime.

Ever feel like you are about to push a hole into your thumb when you are trying to depress that pin far enough to slide the PTO shaft onto the tractor or equipment? Drop a dime into the thumb compartment of your glove. Now your thumb pushes on the dime and the dime pushes on the pin. Gotta love low-tech solutions.

I guess it's a function of age, but I can't come anywhere near being able to exert pressure with my fingers that I could when I was younger.

Grease also helps a lot...

I grease mine at the beginning of each season - a heavy coat of grease brushed in with a cheap flux brush. This makes it MUCH easier to mount up, and also makes the pin easier to push in and lock.

Great idea. I've never thought of dropping a dime before trying this but on a few occasions I've almost dropped a duece straining so hard to hook up the PTO shaft

I tend to use a lot of silicone spray as it doesn't attract dirt and grit like heavy grease can.

Between the GRUNT needed to lift the unattached end, depress the locking pin and rotate the shaft to get engagement - - YOU BET I'm going to give the dime a try, next time.

I have so much grease on the PTO stub and all over and inside the U-joint - - at times it feels like pushing puddin' into a rat hole.

Well I'm more the type that doesn't like to fight things. I would remove the spring from that pin and install a lighter one so that I wouldn't have to push as hard. My 660 rototiller has a collar for the pto that was a pain to pull back and push onto the pto shaft at the same time. I took the collar apart and installed a lighter spring. What a difference in the amount of effort to install.

Reminded me of something an older salesman told me when I bought the first Kubota. I was explaining where I lived and he said he knew the area:

"I delivered a tractor to a farmer right near you. Well, he wasn't really a farmer. He was wearing gloves and it wasn't even cold outside."

I like the idea but I prefer low tech and CHEAP solutions so I'll use a penny instead.

Works 4 me.

But then when I snowplowed I WD40'd my hydraulic connectors all the time and never had trouble.
The spray can has just enough pressure to flush out grit and grime plus just oily enough to make easy connecting.

Good suggestion, now I'll have to see if I can find my dime bag.

I think I read another trick here to lessen the struggle:
If its a 3 PTH attachment, after about the 3rd or 4th try, I've used a bungee cord to support the PTO shaft off the top link.
This frees up energy to concentrate on aligning the yoke with the shaft and pushing the pin, or pulling the collar back while sliding shaft forward, etc....

Once I get the mower on and then do something like catch a stump with its front so that a 7' rotary mower is standing straight up and down about to invert upside down onto my roll bars (what a sight!)....that's when I drop a deuce!

I hit the spring w wd40 before hook up. Also hit the pto shaft on the tractor with it.

A can of WD40 is standard equipment in the tool box on my tractor. WD40 is not what I call a long term solution, but has never failed to let me down short term. It also helps on implements with rusted nuts and bolts when nothing else is available while in the field and something requires adjustment.

The biggest pain I've had connecting a pto wasn't with a sliding pin but with a sliding ring. I was kind of glad when mine broke and I replaced it with a pin type.
