1956 International Harvester #300 Utility w/FEL and Yanmar 2310D w/ FEL
New to this forum, and I'm lookng at a reconditioned YM2310D (4x4 version) in WA State today. Would appreciate any tips you can share regarding issues to examine carefully. I'm an owner of a larger farm tractor (1956 International Harvester 300 Utility) so I can glean through most issues, but just wondering if anything unusual should be looked at more carefully. thank you.

If you search this forum for "reconditioned" you will find a lot of opinions on reconditioning. Find out just what is ment by reconditioned in this case. Sometimes it just means paint. There are stories about vietnam recons being put to gether from parts from several tractors. I have no personal knowelege of this. I have a used not recon yM2020 and I am very Happy with it. The 2310 is a powershift tractor which means it has a shift on the go trans infrount of a multi speed manual trans. Shifts should be solid and immediate. No slippage on powershift. Drain a little fluid from each of the front drive wheels, and the trans. (These tractors were run in a flooded rice patty). Check front drive fluid level and look at pivot point on the front axle. There should be 0 play at this point. Put something heavy like a bushhog on the tractor raise it and see it it stays up or leaks down. Of course you are the judge of the warranty.

Sounds like you know what to look for mostly but as Norm said these were mostly sold for rice paddy use so check the front axle.

This promotional photo was on a Yanmar International corporate website. Apparently Yanmar considers running half-submerged in a rice paddy as normal so they are pretty well sealed. But occasionally posters here have found nothing but dried mud in the front differential of their "new, reconditioned" tractor.

Aside from that it should all be normal stuff to check.

2310D is a nice tractor and the shuttle shift is great with a FEL. How many hours are indicated on the meter?

Welcome Bruce,
I tend to share the negative view of "Recons". Some here have had good luck with them though. I just think a decent Yanmar wouldn't need much more than regular servicing and maybe some cosmetic touch-up. Have you checked with Buck at EFC ? He has one listed on his site and is located in Washington.

My 2310 was submerged long enough to half fill the starter with gunk, bought a new gear reduction starter, it starts fine now . The throw out bearing was seized so the fingers of the pressure plate failed , had the clutch and pressure plate rebuilt and a new throw out bearing and she's good as new (Saved a bit by rebuilding and learned some.) The rebuilder told me the clutch and pressure plate was out of a Nisson and the throughout bearing was Toyota. The powershift saved the day when the clutch was out, just shift the powershift to neutral wait a second and I could change ranges with out the clutch.

I wanted to thank all of you for sharing experiences regarding my YM2310D question. In hindsight I probably could have saved some $s by going out of state to www.ernies.net or over the mountains to EFS but seeing as my old International Harvester 300 is down, I needed something local I could inspect & purchase more readily. My 4000' of horse fence needs to get going and the 2310D will get the auger around in wet areas where the IH-300 will not. The shuttle shifting is solid, engine appears sound, and the overall condition of the unit appears to warrant the investment. Time will tell, like with all used equipment. As evidenced by most forums out there, every manufacturer can have their disappointments. I do have some other questions/comments related to the 2310D which I'll post separately.
