I needed some chains for my 4wd mahindra and I had access to some old tractor chains. I have about 5 pairs of old chains and a couple partials that I could use for parts. I got a couple of these to fit my front tires but haven't started on the rears yet.

Is there any informational sites out there for dimensions for certain tire sizes? I am ok with rebuilding the chains but I just want to know what sizes are correct. I have a general idea on where to measure the tire if this information isn't available but I just thought I'd check first. Chains are so expensive I hate to buy new if I can use these.

Thanks!

Peerless Chain Company manufactures and distributes chain, tire chains, wire forms, tire cables, wire rope, cordage and accessories has some specs. The width of cross links is measured by adding your sectional radius dimension to the width of the track dimension. You probably already know how to measure total length of chain

does that mean the chain when fitted will sit about halfway down the sidewall of the tire? I was just guessing that the side chain should be a little longer than the circumference of the rim and that the cross chain length would be the perimeter of a half circle (or whatever odd shape) a cross section of the remainder of the tire. So if I am understanding you right if I added radius plus track with I'd come about halfway down the rubber on each side. That makes sense. I guess that would also give me a target size for the circumference of the side chain.

Chains should go down almost to the rim. Go here http://www.aawheel.com/SiteResources/data/files/SCC.pdf
This takes a while to load but near the bottom is a chart that shows width of chain and length corresponding to a stock number. Slightly above this chart are tractor chain listing. At the tractor chains find your tire sizes, notice the stock number then shoot down the charts until you match that stock number. I hope you have more than dial up because this site took at least a minute to or more to load with fiber optic.

If you already have the crosslinks and they are about the right length, that will dictate how far from the rim the side chain is. I had to add a coupla links to my crosslinks so I alternated the added links, inside , then outside rather than add one link at each end. Worked for 4yrs now in mud and snow. If you are buying side chain, get a little extra, just in case. Easier to cut off than add on

Tim,

For what it's worth, don't rely on published "specs" without measuring or trying on your tire.

I purchased Double Diamond Ice chains, and they would not fit. Thank goodness that It was only an hours drive to the factory, and I did not have to ship them. They had me bring them back and they contacted the tire manufacture, (Titan), and received the correct measurements. Then they fixed them.

Darned if I can fathom why the same size tires could have such different dimensions...but mine did differ significant from the published specs.
