Tire chains or new tires?

Have a lil beaver satoh, has these stupid turf tread tires -- and they are useless!!! As usual have a lakamoney issue, so am I better off with chains or shelling out for AG tires? Use it for cutting the yard, and some woods work.

If the majority of your use is for mowing I would keep the tires and put chains on. Chains can be had for very little money. There are many different chains out there also. I would go with what I call road chains. Single link, not very agressive, but will give you maximum traction and not tear up your lawn. On my old wheel horse lawn tractor I ran chains all year round as I was just to lazy to take them off in the spring and they can be a pain to put back on in the winter. They didnt rip up the lawn at all.

Another thing if you dont want to use the chains is get industrial R4 tires. They will be less agressive on the lawn as with the ag R1 tires but will be nice in the woods. They are a thicker tire with more surface area so less chance of puncture in the woods. The turf tire would have me worried working in the woods. just my opinion. Good luck wiht whatever you decide.

Thanks for the idea, ordering chains for now till I can afford new tires -- ground damage isnt a big deal, I can bounce a pitchfork off the grass! LOL

I'm running R4s and I still use chains in the winter (snow and ice constantly for 5 months). Many times in the summer when the ground is wet I'm tempted to stick the chains back on so I can get up some of my bush hills.

I find the ride too bumpy to run chains in the summer.

My wife cuts the property around our house with turf tires so they don't wreck the grass and in the winter I add wheel weights and chains so she can plow our and the neighbors drive. It took me awhile to believe that chains and wheel weights would work but stupid is as stupid does. Buy weights and chains they are well worth their cost.
