1975 David Brown
Hi, I've lurked her for a while and signed up today.

I have a 1975 David Brown industrial tractor loader backhoe that I bought about 17 years ago. I used to clear my property back then, but only use it once or twice a year now. I'm currently shopping for a smaller tractor, that's a different story.

The rear tires on my tractor are in tough shape, the originals I assume. The sidewalls are starting to split and I have managed to put some good gashes in them. One is flat with a big tear in the inner tube. New tires are out of the question. I want to replace the tube and perhaps patch up the tire if that's possible. I'm confused as to the size. The tire is marked 16.9/14-30. I've looked at Gempler's but they don't seem to offer a tube that size. I also found a tube on e-bay listed as 16.9-30. The price is good but I don't know if it will fit since they don't have the number 14 in their size.

I appreciate any advice.

That's an old tire. Obsolete sizing would have it a 14-30 tire. Later on the methodology of measuring tires changed and the same tire became a 16.9x30. Your current tire was made back when both standards were still in use. Look for a 16.9x30 tube or tire and be happy.

Depending on the tire damage you may be able to put an inside boot to repair the damage. Then take the old tube, cut the filler stem off and cut the tube down the inner circumference. Use this old tube as a liner. Place it in the tire then put the new tube in. You will have a good repair. I have used this technique on many tires with good success. I have not used it on a rear tire, no need so far, but would use it if needed before buying a tire.

I recently replaced a front tire that had a hole in it that started opening up. The boot repair was starting to exit the tire. When I removed the tire the boot patch was holding but exiting the opening hole in the tire. The old tube liner was good as well as the old tube. I reused the old tube liner and old tube in the new tire. Working good.
