One of my sawmill customers left his tandem trailer at my mill for me to load his lumber on as it came off the mill. Before loading much lumber on it I noticed the tires looked low so I measured them and they were about 20 - 25 psi. Sidewall said max was 50 psi so I pumped them up with my 12 VDC compressor. It took about 5 minutes per tire so I went about doing other tasks and came back before desired pressure was reached - except for one of them which reached 60 psi. I immediately bled it back to 50 and continued sawing for the rest of the day. The next day (or maybe second day) I noticed the temporarily over-inflated tire had exploded and I don't know when and didn't hear it. (The trailer was never moved) The tires are old but with deep and very hard tread. If I screwed up I want to take responsibility so I need to know if over-inflating a safe tire by 10 psi for a minute or so will damage it. Or does this tire(s) appear so bad that it is better that I blew it up on my property rather than it (they) blow on the highway with 3 - 4 thousand extra pounds on them.

I think it’s the old tire at fault. There’s no way a 10 psi overinflation especially without moving caused it to blow. Plus the tires should have been properly aired up to start with.

If it was going to blow due to over inflation it would have probably blown when the pressure went high, not at sometime later after you bled it down. With the trailer loaded it would have probably blown going down the road with the original twenty pounds since that would have been inadequate for the load. The owner should spring for a complete set of new tires and thank your for finding the problem. Will he? That may be another story.

check the DOT date code. if its over 8yrs old it should have been replaced.
There are LOTS of trailers on the road that are accidents waiting to happen.

Thanks for the replies - they were what I was hoping to hear. Owner is coming tomorrow with 4 wheel assemblies and floor jacks.

Not your fault. Tire was ruined by running it with 25 psi in it. Could also have a failed repair where it blew.
You are good to go.

Owner came yesterday with 4 new tires mounted on the wheels. No bad feelings - he knew the tires were old. He bought the homemade trailer with the old tires and was trying to get all he could out of them. Should have taken a pic but we were busy jacking, torqueing, etc, He'll be back with more logs.

Here is a very recent tire story for ya!

Some years ago I gave my (purchased new by me) 1977 F-250 4x4 to my son in Georgia.
He recently decided that since he has a Summer home in New England, and his Georgia garage does not have space, that I should store it for him in New England.

The tires were 25 years old, and I implored him to get new wheels and tires before making the trip (tires were no longer made for the wheel size).
He stated to me that the sidewalls were not cracked, and the tread was excellent.
I told him looks did not matter, the rubber was dry rotted!
Get new tires (and wheels)!
He did not want to spend the $1,500+ required.

To put this into perspective.
This is a 53 year old college educated man (I am nearly 80) who is a pilot/training manager for a major airline,.... and he could afford the $1,500+.
Of course, the left front tire blew out at highway (I-95) speed, about 4 hours into the 15 hour drive.
He had to buy 4 new wheels, and tires (used, but good tires) in NC.
He had his 24 year old son along for the ride.
I'll bet my 24 year old grandson will never forget the driving on old tires lesson he received.
Neither my son or grandson were hurt, but other drivers were certainly subjected to unnecessary risk!

My son will likely never forget the icident.
As long as I am alive, I too ..... will never let him forget it!
The moral of the story as I see it: Intelligent people sometimes do stupid things!
