I have a dodge 2500 cummins truck that is in desperate need of tires. It had bfg rugged trail tires on it from stock and at 30000 miles they are shot. I have been stuck twice in the last two weeks and had to get towed. These tires are worthless at the sight of wet grass or mud. I have found a mom and pop tire store that will put on 4 mickey thompson Baja MTZ tires size 265/70/R17 load range E for 200 a peice. If I buy in the next week I can get 4 for the price of 3. I really like the looks of them as they seem to be agressive enough to get me through muddy fields but worry that they may not be a good choice for a 8000 pound truck I need some sugestions. So for 600 bucks i will have new tires. The guy said i should be able to get 30 to 40 thousand miles out of them even with the wieght of my truck. Should i get them

I have had good luck with BFG AT's in the same size and weight range. I hope to get 40k on them. I got 72K out of my original Michelins M/S tires, but it did not take long to figure out the M/S meant "mighty slick". JC

I would think as long as you stay with Load Range E tires, you'll be fine. That was the stock tire on my '08 GMC 2500 diesel.

For the E rated tires Pirelli ScorpionA/T and Bridgestone Dueler A/T are very highly rated and look like they'd handle water really well...

I like the looks of the General Grabber A/T (but not E rated), which are very much like the BFG T/A...

Check out Tirerack.com... they have reviews, pricing, photos etc...

I will get the Duelers next time I buy... err... maybe the Scorpions...:D

I just went through this with my f-250 psd. I looked at them all. I had the BFG rugged terrain and liked them. I was planning on getting the BFG AT's but after looking at them all I came to the Bridgstone dueler revos an TOYO open contry at's The TOYO have a way better warranty. If you look there isn't a tire that competes for the money and warranty. Check them out.

I'd suggest the type off usage you require and the weather/road conditions would be the deciding factor!:D

I've tried all kinds of tires on my 99CTD. After the stock michelins I upsized for a bit taller tire. I have never gone back to stock size tires. no names, high tech retreads, cooper weathermasters, etc etc

My needs are ice and snow, I've never had good luck with the heavy cummins in the mud.

When I used to hang out with the diesel mud truck guys in California, I noticed they all used large tires and tread patterns that clear easily. Loud on pavement and probably worthless on ice and snow. They would launch in 4WD in 3rd gear and hit the pit dumping black smoke with the tires spinning about 55mph. Many times they were in the same class as the 6cyl toyotas. Great stuff, many moons ago...

Do some reading on the web and at the news stand. New tire patterns seem to arrive all the time.

Good luck!

I remember Cooper had some good looking tires, but they cost more than the BFG's I got. The BFG's cost more than I wanted to spend. JC

I was in the same spot (but with a duramax and goodyears) last winter. Tires gave one "goodyear" and were bald and worthless.

Switched to Toyo M55. It's a commercial tire and is 1/2 way between and AT and an MT. Has a light road humm. I went tall and skinny 255/85-16 and seem to have gained 1mpg maybe more. Hard to tell, temps warmed up as fuel prices rocketed up. Haven't put more than 12 miles on it in 30 days.
