Title or bill of sale

When buying should I get a title or a bill of sale? Is there a problem if the seller does not have a title? I know titles are not filed like car titles but I am not sure if they exist at all.

At least in my state they don't use titles on equipment or many trailers. They may on larger trailers as license plate is not required on all trailers here. kt

This topic has been discussed on Tractorbynet many times and so far no one has come up with a state that has a title on tractors; just a bill of sale.

Thanks guys. I knew my state does not register titles but I was concerned there might be some paperwork I was missing out on.

I just created a bill of sale that called out serial numbers on all items, price, and some other stuff then had it notarized while the seller and myself signed it. I did this for a tractor I just bought today.
