Hello all, I am working delivery of my new (for us) TN55S. Yeah! Old Yellar (Case VAC14) will be getting the boot soon. Always worked, and I could always fix what ailed it. Will find out on the new Blue I-talian (Alfa-Lanc-errar-iat).

Anyhow, it is an 8x8 power shuttle. I was looking over the parts diagrams (on line) and am wondering what the difference between the different transmissions. Primarily if the trans is simply a one for one swap (if you had a 12 or 16 speed unit). And what is the creeper option -- it looked like another range to me.

Enjoy!

8x8 isn't enough gears
12x12 or 16x16 is way better.
in an 8x8, you'll always be searching for a better gear and you won't have it
not a problem in a 16x16.
Much easier to put the tractor in the proper RPM range with the right speed.

My 2120. same frame tractor as the TC55 is a 12x12 and that is a good set of ranges for most uses. A creeper isn't really more ranges, it adds a very very low speed range. It is mostly useluf for things like precise seeding and spraying where application rate is controlled by ground speed not ordinary tractor operations.

Brian, I don't think New Holland even offers the 8x8 in the TN anymore. I have it in my TN65 and while it will do the job I will never buy a new tractor with less then 12 forward gears. For a basic ranch tractor it does the job though. My use expanded drastically since I bought my TN back in 99.

On the creeper: the diagram and other things I have seen looked as if it was a super-low range - not another gear.

Anyone ever taken a look at how different the 8x8 is versus the 12 or 16 pseed trans? Would there be any possibility of a case swap, or of a gear set swap? Just wondering.

Anything is possible, but the costs would be so prohibitive that finding the correct tractor would be much easier and cheaper.

I figured it would have to be one of those -- oh, lookey there lieing in the yard -- sort of thing. Found strange things before (and spent a lot of hours on the web to figure out what-fits-what). That's one of the beauties of these groups -- ask long enough, hard enough, in enough different ways and sometime what you are looking for comes your way. Sometimes.
