TN70 won\'t go forward

I've been enjoying my 2001 TN 70 for a couple of weeks now, but yesterday I went out to move some snow around, and my transmission warning light came on. The shuttle shifter moves forward, but the light flashes a 4-1 transmission code, and the tractor will not move. It will, however, go in reverse, so I drove it back to the shed backwards. I thought that maybe there wasn't enough hydraulic fluid, so I topped it off, but that made no difference. The only thing that I changed was to put a pto drive snowblower on the 3 point hitch, which has a hydraulic hook-up for the chutes. The snowblower was used on a pickup that had a front pto, so the fluid in the cylinder was not universal tractor hydraulic fluid. Is it possible that the TN 70 is rejecting this fluid? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: TN70 won\'t go forward

If it was too low on fluid to movew forward.. do you think it would have moved in reverse? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Also.. there is no sensor to detect what brand / type of fluid you have in there.

I don't have your answer other than to say it probably wasn't either of the two things you were worried about so far.. but I'll bet here in a few minutes someone will tell you what fault code that 4-1 blink indicates.

Re: TN70 won\'t go forward

I had a similar problem with my TN75 after appx. 60hrs. I have the power shuttle on mine and the 41 code means there is a problem with the forward solenoid. Mine had to be returned to dealer for addl. troubleshooting, as solenoid problem was ruled out by tech in the field. Dealer ended up taking tractor in and replacing the ECU module to fix the problem.

Re: TN70 won\'t go forward

I bet it is either the forward solenoid on your power reverser or the module. Not certain on the 4-1 blinking code... anyway your dealer shoud be able to fix that in no time.

Re: TN70 won\'t go forward

I called the dealer, and the mechanic told me it was probably the shuttle shift switch. He looked up the code, and said that it indicated a bad switch. I asked him about the solenoid, but it sounds to me like he remembers the switch going bad when they had it in the shop before they sold it to me. I'm trying to get the switch at cost, at least. Hopefully that will clear up the problem. In the meantime he suggested that I try to dry the switch out with a hair dryer. I'll let you know what I find out. Thanks!

This would be a concern to me. If the replacement switch corrected the no forward movement I would be looking for an answer as to what is causing the problem.

Re: TN70 won\'t go forward

You would think that the chance of 2 switches are going bad shortly after they are installed is pretty slim... but it is still possible and that happened already to me... was nothing on my TC55DA though. Maybe there is something not right with the module.

Re: TN70 won\'t go forward

AS PER THE REPAIR MANUAL, the 41 fault code does indicate a problem with the forward solenoid or its circuit, not the shuttle . A properly trained tech with a diagnostic tool or properly programmed laptop can troubleshoot this circuit from the tractor seat. A loose, faulty or improperly insulated shuttle switch can also trigger rogue faults including 41. This info is NOT included in the service manuals as of 11/05, but has been disseminated in bulletin form.

Re: TN70 won\'t go forward

Thanks Rick. I dug into the tractor a bit, and found that I could switch the wires from the forward to reverse solenoids, and the tractor would move forward or reverse with the shuttle switch only in the reverse position (depending on which solenoid the reverse wire was connected to). This tells me that the problem is not the solenoid. I have a new shuttle switch ordered, but it got lost by FED EX. Hopefully the replacement will show up soon. I guess that if that doesn't fix the problem I'll have to look into the wiring, or the ECU. Luckily I still have my old Ford 5000. Thanks again.
